Barnhill Poorhouse Lookup Please

Post by candc20 » Mon Jan 22, 2007 10:30 am

Hi there - my first time at this site - looks like a great resource. I'm hoping for some help with a lookup in the Barnhill Poorhouse records - would love to do it myself but I'm in Melbourne, Australia :D

1. William John FULLERTON (my GG Grandfather) born in Barnhill Poorhouse 27 Feb 1879, Illegitimate, mother Mary Jane FULLERTON. He was not with his mother during the 1881 Census so are there any records of what happened to him I wonder?
2. His mother, by now Mary Jane McCALL died in the Barnhill Poorhouse 6 December 1908, aged 46 years. Her husband Thomas McCALL was already deceased by this time.

Thanks in advance for any help
Craig Fullerton

Hi Craig
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

Have you tried contacting the Mitchell Library in Glasgow? As far as I'm aware the poorhouse records, if they exist for the period you are looking for, will be held there. They are usually very helpful and may be able to help.

Have you got Mary Jane's marriage entry? If you know her parents names you could check to see if William was with them in 1881. It wasn't uncommon for grandparents to take on an illegitimate child.

Welcome, by the way :D

Hi LesleyB and emanday and thanks for prompt offerings.

LesleyB - will Mitchell provide info to remote people either via online records or lookups? I have had a brief look at their webpage before and didnt think they did.

emanday - Mary Jane's parents were both deceased when she married in 1880, so I'm afraid that's probably not an avenue

thanks
Craig

Mary - sorry MJ's father was not recorded as deceased as I thought, only the mother. I will see what I can find on him, but not hopeful - John FULLERTON, no age known, might be hard to find in Glasgow, lol !

thanks
Craig

If you can find their marriage entry it should give his age.

What was her mother's name?

Hi Mary - As Mary Jane was born in Ireland according to the 1881 Census I believe her parents were too. Father was John, mother, Betsy, maiden name NEWALL. I haven't found a death record for her at Scotlandspeople as yet, nor any earlier Census records (yet!)

thanks for the interest :D

Ouch! Irish records are difficult I'm afraid. I'd point you to ancestryireland.com but unless you know where in Ireland it isn't likely to be that easy, and they only cover Northern Ireland.

Have you found Mary Jane in earlier censuses? If you are very lucky some did actually name the place in Ireland. It might also confirm whether or not she came to Scotland on her own or with her parents.

When you are searching on SP use wildcards, for example Full*rton as there are a fair few Fullartons.

As far as I'm aware, from personal experience, if you request information from the Mitchell they are usually willing to help - I've certainly received a couple of poorhouse application photocopies (small charge involved to cover costs, about £3-£4 I think) and also in response to a query they've checked some other records for me. If it is something specific and you have information which you can give them, as you do with this query, it is worth contacting them I think. I don't think they have much in the way of online records, able to be accessed via the web - its more likely to be paper based.
Let us know how you get on!

Best wishes

Hello and welcome Craig,

I had a look for an application for Mary Jane while I was at The Mitchell this morning but no joy I'm afraid. I also tried for William (John) but again nothing indexed as far as I could see.
There was one Mary Jane born Ireland but birth year was out. In case it was an error I will have a look at that record next time I go.

Leave it with me for the moment.

Kind regards,
Annette M
