Early Gartloch records

Post by SteveGibs » Tue Jan 23, 2007 7:47 am

Hi. I am looking for information on a nurse Ellen Bailey who worked in Gartloch around 1912. I have been in contact with the University and they have no trace. Does anyone out there know anything that could help. The only other info I have is that she had a sister called Elizabeth. [help]

Welcome to TalkingScot Steve.Could you give us a bit more info re this lady?Where is Gratloch? Do you know what type of Nursing she did?
Any idea of her age, birthplace?I would be inclined to look at the 1901 Census if you have any idea of her age. This would hopefully give you a birthplace, maybe family members.
Which University did you contact for info re her?

Ellen Bailey

Gartloch Hospital (asylum). I know almost nothing more about her at all. While clearing out my deceased mother's estate, I came across 2 books containing pictures, poems, clippings etc. Both books have a similar inscription inside the cover. 'To my neice Ellen Bailey from her Australian uncle James Syder'. The other book is to Elizabeth Bailey (her sister). I contacted the email address i found for greater glasgow nhs board. They checked their records but found no trace. However, I beleive the NHS records only go back to 1948. Ellen Bailey appears to have been their around 1912. I have no idea how my mother came to have these books. If I'd known they were there while she was alive, I might have been able to get some more info. My surname is Gibson and I live in Newcastle on Tyne. In the books there is an item written at Elswick Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne. They contain some marvellous sketches. One is by a 'Nance Calder' who I've traced to the Glasgow Players.

If you click the search button at the top of the page and type in GARTLOCH you'll find several other informative posts that you might like to check out, like the following one I opened.
