Hi all
i was at NRH on friday and found two deaths both of which died in a poorhouse. the first was govan poorhouse in 1893 and the second was in paisley poorhouse in 1897.
i just wondered if there would be poorhouse records concerning these at the mitchell? im going there on tuesday so if there is i can look then.
also i have someone who is listed as a pauper on the 1861 census for st quivox, so would this imply that he had applied for poor relief?
if so would there be records for ayrshire poor relief at the mitchell also?
thanks
Karen

Hi Karen,
Annette (Nelmit) or Jack are the ones to help you on how to get Poor Relief info at the Mitchell....hopefully they'll be on later & can confirm how to get the info you need.
As for Ayrshire you could try this site:
http://www.ayrshire-roots.co.uk/index1.php
They have a poor relief database. If you see your persons name/details then you can contact the North Ayrshire Library and for a very reasonable payment they will send you a copy of the application. It does take a few weeks but their info, apparently, is not digitised, hence the delay.
Good luck
Donna

Re Poorhouse Records
Hi Karen,
The Mitchell may have records for the 1893 Govan PH death,
but please bear mind that even though a person died in the Poorhouse there isn't always a record.
(and it doesn't help any in that some of the books are missing)
A look at the P Law name index on computer in the Archives would be your best step.
Hope it's an easily spelled name, but if one that has many variations then you may have to scroll through the list....
This is because there is no *wildcard* search available at The Mitchell,
but the GWSFHS at their Partick premises does have one on their computer index.
(their name index only goes up to about 1910)

For the Paisley 1897 death contact Local Studies at the Reference Library - they are very helpful.
There's a wee bit about their records here on TS -

But the link mentioned seems to be broken just now....

The whole of the Renfrewshire Council website seems to be offline just now. I was checking and updating the links on the TalkingScot libraries page and found the "page not found" answer for Renfrewshire. Probably worth trying again tomorrow.
All the best,
Andrew

Re Poorhouse Records
Thanks for checking it out Andrew,
Maybe it's just a wee glitch on their web page - as you suggest, i'll try tomorrow.
Karen, you should be safe enough with Haddow, but always keep Hadden etc in mind.
As long as the name starts with "Hadd" you shouldn't have much trouble finding who you want.
i.e. providing there is a record....hope so!
Jack
ps, yes - the 2nd floor through the wee swing barriers.
