Hi,

If someone dies in Woodilee in 1905 and they were from a poor family from the govan area, would they be buried beside woodilee or back in govan?

Thanks
Vikki

Hi Vikki

The answer has to be either :!:
Its unusual in itself, someone from Govan being in Woodielee at all. Govan parish had its own lunatic asylum called Hawkhead (at that time -its now called Leverndale)
If the person had abandoned their family and moved away then they would be placed in the institution supportd by that parish.
In that circumstance the family may have lost contact or may not have wished to recover the body to place them in a grave alongside other relatives.
The reverse is also true. If the person mattered to them it would be possible using horse and cart, to transport the body across Glasgow to Govan.

At that time most folk in Govan would be classified as poor since working in the shipyards and ancillary services was not a well paid job and subject to periodic lay-offs and short-time working.

At least you can narrow down a lair search to graveyards around Woodielee and Govan itself.
