Why are poor house records for the monklands in glasgow.

:? Why are both records for the poorhouses for New and Old Monkland held in Glasgow rather in the North Lanarkshire archives in Cumbernauld. Is it for easy travel to and from Glasgow or is it an other reason altogether.

Probably the records were sent to the Mitchell when the old county council was abolished and the district came under Strathclyde regional council authority...
Glasgow's Mitchell would have been the natural place to send these records.

Strathclyde regional council was abolished in 1996 and Monkland became a part of North Lanarkshire.

Thank goodness that records were sent to the Mitchell as many records were simply tossed out during government re-organisation.

Obviously I appreciate it's frustrating if you have to travel out of the local area to view local record but, from a purely selfish point of view, I'm glad they are in the Mitchell. My reason is that the opening hours are much more user friendly - I can visit on a couple of evenings or Saturday. I have never yet managed a trip to North Lanarkshire archives as I can only go on days off and usually manage to find something else to do instead :(

As I understand it - from the horse's mouth so to speak, Glasgow city archives [aka the Mitchell] have refused to furnish North Lanarkshire archives with copies of the Old and New Monkland poorhouse records.

Poor show Glasgow I'd say. Mind you the Mitchell is easier to get to for most people than Lenziemill on the southern frontier of Cumbernauld, terrific though the staff there are.

... See my previous posts on this subject.

There are very few surviving records kept at the Mitchell for New Monkland (Airdrie, mainly) Poorhouse. The best of which is the Governor's Journal.

I even thought that boundary changes would have dictated where any records were held but I've so far tried Falkirk, Motherwell and Bothwell without any success.
