New Monkland Poorhouse Lookup Requested, Please

Post by bobj-kirk » Sat Apr 21, 2007 11:30 pm

I have recently made some progress on a family member who has been a problem for several years. His name is William Anderson born ca 1789. My first trace of him came as the father on an OPR birth in New Monkland:
Mary Anderson illigt Daugr of William Anderson, Nailor, Airdrie and Mary Thom was born 31st Dec 1814 & baptd 11 June 1815.

The family did not stay together after Mary was born, and I had no other information to track William. Now, I have found a William Anderson, occupation nailor on the 1841 and 1851 censuses in Airdrie that appears to be my man. On the 1841 census, he has a son David born ca 1829, but no wife. Tracking down the son David’s death registration, I find that William’s wife was Marion[?] Young.

In the 1851 census, I find a William Anderson alone in the New Monkland Poor’s House. He is listed as a pauper inmate, unmarried, age 62, occupation nailor. He does not appear in the 1861 census. There is a different William Anderson, age 60, occupation Coal Miner in the New Monkland Poorhouse in 1861, but he is not mine. I cannot find my William Anderson in the civil death registrations, so I presume he died between 1851 and 1854.

I would appreciate it if someone could look up the poorhouse records for my William Anderson. I have never seen poorhouse records before, so I don’t know what to expect. I am hoping that they will confirm the names of William’s wife and son, and give the date of his death. What I really need is some clue to his parents or siblings.

Hello Bob,

I'll take a note of it and look next time I'm at The Mitchell.

Don't get your hopes up though, the chances of an application being there are very slim but worth a check.

Kind regards,

Bob,

Very few records exist for New Monkland Poor House in Airdrie. So far, the only record I have found is the Governor's Journal that is held in the Mitchell Library. Whilst this makes interesting and sometimes hilarious reading, it gives no information about the resident individuals.

Sorry to disappoint.

Helen,

I realize that these records are hit and miss, but I was hoping to get some help with a difficult problem. Have you found any sources other than the censuses that give information on Airdrie poorhouse inmates prior to 1855?

I had a look when I was at the Mitchell yesterday but the only William Anderson in the right age group was born in Ireland.

I'll do a wee bit more searching on Saturday.

Annette,

Thanks for looking. It sounds like the chances aren't too good of finding something, but maybe I'll get lucky. My fingers are stilled crossed.

Airdrie Poorhouse Records

Post by frances » Fri Apr 27, 2007 5:48 pm

Hello Annette

I wonder if you would be kind enough to look in The Mitchel for details of my Great Great Grandmother Sarah Kelly/Kelley nee Burns who died in Airdrie Poorhouse 16/02/1911. She was the widow of William Kelley and was born in Ireland C 1840.

There is no hurrry just if you could fit it in sometime when you have a chance.

Thank you

Kind Regards
