Broomhill Incurable Home, Kirkintilloch.

Post by Moira Crawford » Thu Apr 26, 2007 1:57 pm

Hi folks, In trying to trace a Margaret MacDonald in the 1891 Census
I came accross a woman of this name, aged 32 years born in Greenock,
a former Domestic Servant.....resident in the above named Home which was situated in Kirkintilloch.

Can anyone tell me if there were records kept with regard to these patients and if so....where I can find them to research? Would I be likely to find out the type of incurable disease she would have been suffering from........perhaps TB or what ever type of illnesses these Homes for Incurables catered for. Any help on this subject would be gratefully received.

Hi Moira
Done a Google for ->Broomhill Kirkintilloch<- ....

It catered for patients suffering from tuberculosis, cancer, chronic rheumatism and other incurable conditions.
"Paupers" were not to be admitted

Very interesting site Jim, I had never heard of it.

Moira,

Glasgow University hold the NHS archives. You can email them with your enquiry and they should be able to send you the record you want as long as it is outside closure.

Kind regards,

Thankyou Jim......will ' Google ' and take a look at it....never thought
of that approach. Found ' Institutions ' section/link elsewhere on Talking Scot but hadn't got around to it this afternoon.

Thank you for the link too, Annete M...I had a notion I'd heard that Glasgow University Archives held some files on some ' institutions '
.....a Sailors Orphanage in Greenock....and have that on a ' to do ' list.
This is all to try and solve my biggest brick wall ( had it since 1985 , no less!!! )

Maybe this is my lucky day and 'll find Mgt McDonald....mother of Alice
today???????????????
( But don't worry I'm not daft enough to hold my breath  )

If my desktop setup wasn't in dreaded blue screen of horror mode, I'd give you the name and email address of the archivist, - it will be there somewhere on my backup on an external HD, but I've other priorities just at the moment ...... thinks .... isn't there a FAQ here ?

Two minutes ... see http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6002 which I think just repeats the info that Annette gave you, - as Alastair Tough prefers not to give out his direct email address.

Thanks to you too David WW..........

the deed is done ( the email written )
to request Alistair Tough's Broomhill Home for Incurables' records.
I have viewed the very unit on the google site and read the 'stuff'
...........can do no more ( I think ) but cross my fingers for a couple of weeks or so.

Thanks everyone..................Moira C.
