Catholic Orphanage for Boys

Post by Caroline » Sun May 13, 2007 12:10 pm

Just found two of my relations in the 1901 census living in the Catholic Orphanage for Boys at 570 Gallowgate, Glasgow.

Does anyone know anything about this place or where I could obtain more info?

I'm a bit puzzled at finding them in the Orphanage though, as they're not orphans! They were living with their parents in the 1891 census, then their mother died in 1894, but their father remarried again in 1895 and he's alive and well in Linwood in 1901 along with his second wife and their 3 children.

Any suggestions?

Hello Caroline

Sorry I cant help with information on the orphanage.

As for the boys being in the institution, even though their father remarried. It could be a case that with the new wife and kids, they couldnt afford to keep them all. OR his new wife wasnt too impressed about looking after someone elses wains as well as her own.
