Hello All,
I have a relative, James Innes, who died in 1897 in the Craighleigh Poorhouse in Edinburgh, age 82, occupation pauper. I have tried a number of times to find information about this poorhouse and where he migh be possibly buried but have been unsuccessful. The person who was the informant on his death certificate was the Asst Governor of the poorhouse, does anyone know of this poorhouse and know where I might find information on where my rellie is buried or any other information which might be pertinent to this relative.
Thanking in advance
Marion

Hi Marion,
The place will probably be (St Cuthbert's) Craigleith Poorhouse. The main building is now part of the Western General Hospital.

One nagging doubt - check the place name for sure - there was also Craiglockhart Poorhouse on the other side of the city.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Marion & all
I don't think this is going to be a great help to you personally Marion, but it may help someone else in a similar position - it appears that Edinburgh City Archives have some records for Craiglockhart Poorhouse from 1859-1963. Quite what the actual content of these records might be, I don't know. It may just be stuff like plans or board meetings or whatever, so may not be of any great use to the family historian looking for mention of inmates' names. In addition they also hold records for St Cuthbert's/West Kirk Charity Workhouse, which it seems was what later became Craigleith... but no dates are suggested for these records, so not really a great deal of help....
Best wishes
Lesley
