Post by darylrodger » Mon Jul 09, 2007 8:57 pm

I was wandering if anyone can tell me what kind of asylum Kirkland's was ? One of my hubby's ancestor's died there in 1910. Her name was Jessie Sime, nee Brander.

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl

Have a look at
http://gdl.cdlr.strath.ac.uk/airgli/airgli0127.htm

It gives a bit of the history of the Asylum as well as all the other Glasgow hospitals.
As the name suggests it was a psychiatric hospital in the days before they had proper treatments for psychiatric conditions. Many confused, wandered elderly folk ended up in them too.

Hello Daryl,

I transcribed the poorhouse application, Jessie's son made, while I was at The Mitchell today and now I've just noticed you live in Glasgow.

Would you like me to post it here or would you prefer to view it yourself at The Mitchell?

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hi Annette,

Wow! Thank you for doing that! :D. Would you mind posting it on here, as I'm suffering from a prolapsed disc in my spine at the moment, and it's causing me a lot of pain, so I can't manage a visit to the Mitchell.

Kind regards,

Daryl

Hi Annette,

Thanks for posting the transcript of the Asylum application for poor Jessie.
It certainly shows a lot of detail about the family, which I didn't know about! It also may explain why it doesn't mention her husband John, as I think he may have left her, and that's why I can't find him anywhere!!!!I know he was alive when she died in 1910, but can't find his death at all.

Another mystery to ponder ?

Thanks again.

Regards,

Daryl

Hello Daryl,

Husband - John Sime, Timekeeper with Anchor Line age 63 years b 5/5/42 at Urquhart, Moray. Prot. Son of James Sime, blacksmith and Isabella Sime b/d

Other applications I've looked at usually describes the female as deserted if the husband has left her.
The fact that she was described as married along with the above info suggests that he was as sea.

Perhaps he died abroad. :?

I take it you have viewed the death entries of the 3 John S*mes, who are about the right age, on SP.

kind regards,
Annette M

Hello Annette,

I've emailed the archives at Glasgow Uni about John Sime, as they hold archives on the Anchor Line Ltd company. Hopefully they might have some personnel records regarding him when he worked for them.

No, I haven't seen the death certs. for the 3 John S*imes that appear on SP. I'll have a look later today.

Regards,

Daryl
