Hi,
I've come across the word lister in the Burgh Court Records before and it is clear that
the person writing is referring to a dyer.
What made me question this word was that it is clearly spelled lynster, and though at that time spelling wasn't of great importance there don't seem to be a lot of spelling mistakes in the records
but sometimes i's and Y's are interchanged which would still make it linster.
Also the items in the records before and after make me think that the surveyor definition
is more appropiate.
Alexander Christie is named as a lynster, and some time before this particular record
Alex Christie is made a Burgess & Freeman, gratis at the request of Alexander
Brander one of the Baillies and the same Alexander Brander is buying a lot of land at this time,
adding to his estate.
I don't think Alexander Brander had a lot to do with dyers but it's obvious he is having a lot to do with people who measure pieces of land, so this is why I feel that the definition of surveyor is better.
Of course I could be totaly wrong adding two & two, making six and a certain poor dyer is birlin in his grave!!
Regards
Jen
