General Assembly Teacher !!

I have been looking at the marriage certificate for Robert Findlay and Jessie Anderson Sutherland , 1st June 1849 in Latheron. On it Robert's occupation looks like " General Assembly Teacher", has anyone any idea what this might have been.

In the 1851c for Achow, Latheron I can't quite make out his occupation "General ??? Teacher.

Any help appreciated.

This was a teacher in a General Assembly school, ie, one funded by the church.
