Another Little bottlemaker in Glasgow....

Post by littlealison » Mon Nov 15, 2010 12:02 pm

Hello again, all.
Thank you for the previous info, it has helped me trace a lot more about my ggfather.
(Which has put me in touch with his descendants in South Africa and New Zealand!)

I am now trying to trace a greatuncle of mine, born in Dublin (his father went there from Glasgow) who was apparently staying in a Salvation Army hostel in London Road, Glasgow in 1926. I'd really like to know how he was there, because in 1911 he was with a wife and large family in Dublin.

Can any one put me on to any history of this place?
(I already googled the SA, no joy.)
His name was Ritchie Little, relation of bottlemakers in Anderston and Camlachie.

Hello Alison,

Here’s the 1927 Glasgow Directory, see page 593, there’s a women’s hostel in High Street, but I can’t see what you’re looking for. London Road is on page 945. That would be it at 102 London Street, Salvation Army Hotel. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... x-glas.htm

In Australia we used to have People's Palaces, which were cheap hotels run by the Salvation Army. But they were just like any hotel, only cheaper, and anybody could stay there.

This 1920 report in a New Zealand newspaper refers to it as a Hostel. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bi ... rmistice--

On page 33 of the 1914 Salvation Army Yearbook, 102 London Street, Glasgow, is listed under Shelters and Poor Men’s Metropoles. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=xc1 ... CCsQ6AEwAA

See this page under Night Shelters. http://www.workhouses.org.uk/SA/SA.shtml

Have you seen the article in Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser (Dublin), Friday, February 26, 1886, headed ‘The Bottlemakers” It mentions Thomas and Richard Little. It was to do with a strike at the Irish Glass Bottle Company at Ringsend. Richard was referred to as Ritchie Little.

Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Hello again Alan.
Thanks for research. Hope you didn't have to go through all those pages of the Glasgow Directory!
I may come back to this for other relatives, it's a later resource.

BUT I have found more about Ritchie Little since.
A useful unusual name, when Little is an impossible one to search for! (He was John Little jnr's eldest son.) He also comes under Richard and Richie.... He was 63 and a skilled bottle maker, which wasn't much use when all the bottle works were going over to machines to make the bottles.

Your most interesting link is the one to the workhouse history.
Ritchie emigrated to Canada in 1926 from the hostel in Glasgow. by the ship Metagama, and I've now found him at both ends. Also my sister sent me a letter from his son Samuel (b1905, d 2009, yes 104)
which confirms his emigration, following most of his children to Canada after his wife Margaret died in 1918.
Seems he probably had assistance from the Sally Army to get to Canada, yes?

The reference in 1886 is definitely him.
Carroll and Walsh, involved in the case, I find in the Irish census were members of large Catholic families in Dublin. The tip of an iceberg showing here, I think. There was a lot of hostility between them and the Protestants at the time.....and if you read carefully, it wasn't about the strike....
If you have access to the Freeman's Journal (here through the British Library, invaluable resource - how do you do it?) search in 1886 for 'John Little' and 'Mr Little' - seems his father, then manager at the Irish Glass Bottle Works, took a hand in the strike, not to his credit!

Thanks again - best wishes - Alison.

Hello Alison,

He may have had some sort of assistance from the Sallys. He wasn’t much of a spring chicken but perhaps there was a scheme that covered his circumstances.

The Scottish Emigration Database has records of voyages by the Metagama from Scotland to North America in 1923 carrying groups of Salvation Army passengers. (they only have 1923) http://www.abdn.ac.uk/emigration/emigpa ... &passdest=

I have checked to see if any of his children went in 1923, but no.
That's Richard, Joseph and Samuel. And Ritchie jnr, who was older. I do know they went, but not if they went from Glasgow. Also May and Teresa, but I have no married names.....

Will the Scottish Emigration Database expand, do you think? It could be very useful if it did.
I shall try the Montreal directories again, they are online.
I have written to Ritchie's grandson, but no reply. ah weel.....I do know a little more!
Thanks again - Alison

Hello Alison,

The Scottish Emigration Database site seems to have been around for about five years. In the database they have 669 passengers between 1890 and 1922, 19,129 in the first four months of 1923, 701 between 1924 and 1940, and 592 between 1941 and 1960. I don’t think anything much has happened there for some years and the site appears dormant.

All the best,
Alan
