What inn?.....

Post by Dennis » Mon Nov 21, 2005 10:27 pm

Hello,

From the 1851 Freecen I have a George Gallpen listed as 'Innkeeper', in Haddington. How would I go about finding out what was the name of the inn?

Hello Dennis
I have no expertise in finding this sort of information.
But might you research the very address he was living in for the census-
couldn't that be the inn? Maybe google the address - maybe its still an inn!
Great if it were that easy.
Good luck

I worked in Haddington for 14 years. I've been in most (all?) of the inns (alright, pubs) in the town. Some of them could do with a lick of paint, but I'm not sure that any of them look like they were there in the 1850s. The oldest is probably the Mercat Hotel in the High Street.

I think you probably should seek the microfilm of the 1851 census of Haddington (at an LDS centre?) and see if the name of the inn is given.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Apparently George's mom-in-law Mary Perkins ( nee Dickson) was a Vintner/Publican/ Innkeeper at her death in 1848 in Haddington. Gets me wondering if there was a will that may state the name of the inn ( perhaps George took it over? )

Hi Dennis,

The following map of Haddington from 1853 shows a number of inns. Now I see that some of the watering holes that I have been in were there more than 150 years ago.

Hi Andrew,

Thar be a will, but £5 for 5 pages? George & Sarah marry the year after her mom Mary dies. I don't know if the name of the inn would be in the will, nor if Sarah's mom actually owned the inn outright. I've got a feeling about 'The Black Bull Inn'; been there?

From the map, the Black Bull Inn is the one I know as "The Pheasant" nowadays. I've been in there many a time.

You have to judge the value for money - some you win, some you lose. I've been happy with the results each of the 4 times I've spent a fiver there.

I agree with Andrew that only you can judge if it's worth "risking" the £5 for the will. My own experience is that the 5 Wills I have downloaded were well worth it..From them I've learned far more than the bare bones of people's names.

All the best

Well, I paid for the will, guess it comes in the post.

What about deeds to property, is there a way to look them up by name & or owner? Were deeds auctioned off? Was property taxed back then?

Hi Dennis
You download the Will Details straight off the site so you can read them immediatly. I have done a couple and found out a lot. Sorry can't help with the rest of the question.
