Boarder/Lodger.....

Post by Jean Jeanie » Thu Feb 17, 2005 10:11 pm

If someone is classed as a boarder on a census rather than a lodger, is it likely they are related in some way? I have a 2 year old boarder living with one of my families.

Haven't found a connection as yet. Is it worthwhile pursuing?

The distinction between a boarder and a lodger was most often on the basis of whether they took their meals with the family or not, - for the moment I can't for the life of me remember which way round it was.

That written I've seen many examples where a relation was described as the one or the other, even although it is obvious that there was a clear relationship to the Head of the Household that could have been shown as such.

Why this was the case is not clear. It could have been confusion on the part of the householder filling in the scehdule; more likely, one would think than on the part of the enumerator who should have been clearer about the procedure.

A 2-year old boarder could have been just that, but could also have been related.

Are there any ummarried daughters of child-bearing age in the household?

Jean

Have found several examples in my line where boarders/lodgers were in fact in-laws.

Hi Davie and Dave

My first thought was a grandchild, given that the eldest daughter in the household was 17 in 1891. But, alas, not the case. I couldn't resist looking up the birth on SP (it's like an addiction. Any little piece of info and I can't leave it alone!)

The child is Jane McBain (illegitimate) and the mother is Elsie McBain. No father listed. The child was born in Grantown, although the mother's address is shown as Faebuie, Cromdale. As my family are Fraser and the maiden name of Mrs Fraser is Grubb, I can see no connection at all.

There are only 5 cottages in Faebuie(as far as I can find out) and my lot have lived in 2/3 of them at various times.

Where was Elsie McBain at the time of the 1891 census? Why did she leave her child? The child Jane McBain is still with the Frasers in the 1901 census, but no mother Elsie.

Another little mystery. Perhaps Elsie died, but even then, why leave her child with "strangers".

Jane McBain was born 18 Sep 1888. Don't know Elsie McBain's d.o.b. The first I heard of her was when I found Jane's birth certificate. Jane was living with my Fraser family at the age of 2 in the 1891 census and 12 in the 1901 census.

Jea

You've piqued my interest now. I have McBain's living in parish of Cromdale at around that time. And I come from Grantown myself.

I have to go out now - its Friday and its pub time! - but I'll have a good rummage in the morning and see if I've got any leads.

Regards

Ellen.

Sorry, you're going to have to wait until Monday for my findings. My daughter is in the BBC3 Choir of the Year Finals in Manchester on Sunday so it'll be a busy weekend.

Andy, How exciting that your daughter's choir has made it to the finals. Good luck on Sunday. Let us know the results.

Hope all goes well tomorrow.

Also hope that you have found a home for wee Jane McBain. She's sitting on top of the scanner at the moment, as I have no "home" to put her in. Puir wee soul.
