If someone is classed as a boarder on a census rather than a lodger, is it likely they are related in some way? I have a 2 year old boarder living with one of my families.
Haven't found a connection as yet. Is it worthwhile pursuing?

That written I've seen many examples where a relation was described as the one or the other, even although it is obvious that there was a clear relationship to the Head of the Household that could have been shown as such.
Why this was the case is not clear. It could have been confusion on the part of the householder filling in the scehdule; more likely, one would think than on the part of the enumerator who should have been clearer about the procedure.
A 2-year old boarder could have been just that, but could also have been related.
Are there any ummarried daughters of child-bearing age in the household?

My first thought was a grandchild, given that the eldest daughter in the household was 17 in 1891. But, alas, not the case. I couldn't resist looking up the birth on SP (it's like an addiction. Any little piece of info and I can't leave it alone!)
The child is Jane McBain (illegitimate) and the mother is Elsie McBain. No father listed. The child was born in Grantown, although the mother's address is shown as Faebuie, Cromdale. As my family are Fraser and the maiden name of Mrs Fraser is Grubb, I can see no connection at all.
There are only 5 cottages in Faebuie(as far as I can find out) and my lot have lived in 2/3 of them at various times.
Where was Elsie McBain at the time of the 1891 census? Why did she leave her child? The child Jane McBain is still with the Frasers in the 1901 census, but no mother Elsie.
Another little mystery. Perhaps Elsie died, but even then, why leave her child with "strangers".

You've piqued my interest now. I have McBain's living in parish of Cromdale at around that time. And I come from Grantown myself.
I have to go out now - its Friday and its pub time! - but I'll have a good rummage in the morning and see if I've got any leads.
