What is an SP Deal?.....

Post by CatrionaL » Tue Mar 22, 2005 11:06 am

In the 1841 Census for Saucell, Paisley, one of my ancestors has as Occupation: SP Deal. I can imagine that deal is short for dealer, but have no clue as to what SP might stand for. Anyone got any bright ideas?

Thanks in advance.

For the 1841 census, there was a limited list of occupations that the enumerator was supposed to make all his people fit. See the list at: http://www.talkingscot.com/censuses/census-1841.htm
Moonwatcher was right - Sp. Deal = Spirit Dealer.

All the best,

Thanks Bob and Andrew.
Should have got that  as so many of my ancestors had that or a similar occupation. On the same Census but with another address is a publican.

However I was trying to fit it in with all the other jobs in the cotton and silk industry.

All the best
