Ironstone Miner.....

Post by marilyn morning » Sun Apr 24, 2005 5:24 am

In the 1861 census, Hugh Dixon is listed as an "ironstone miner." I find four steel works listed in Kilbirine; The Ayrshire, Blair, Eglinton and Glengarnock Steel Works. Do any records exist for these locations? :-k

Hi Marlilyn,

As an ironstone miner, Hugh Dixon is more likely to have worked at one of the numerous ironstone pits to be found around Kilbirnie. Have a look at www.old-maps.co.uk and search on Kilbirnie. If you click on the rural area to the south west of Kilbirnie and zoom in, you will find a number of ironstone pits.

Two sources that may be worth your while contacting are:

Ayrshire Archives e-mail archives@south-ayrshire.gov.uk
and
North Ayrshire Library HQ, Ardrossan e-mail localhistory@north-ayrshire.gov.uk

Ayrshire Archives is an archive facility set up by the three councils of the former Ayrshire (North Ayrshire, East Ayrshire and South Ayrshire).

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hello Andrew

I've clicked on the "Old Maps" and just viewed the numerous ironstone pits in the Kilbirine area. I shall contact the Ayshire Archives. Thank you for these suggestions.
