Which is the correct one to place. I have one who was a police officer when married & police chief when he died.

Dennis,

I would list his occupation as "law enforcement".

He may well have reached the top of the promotion ladder in the years between his marriage and his retirement. Or the person registering his death "promoted" him on paper, maybe on purpose, maybe not. Without finding his service records, you will not know for sure. So, both occupations could be correct, at their separate times.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Well well. He had been married twice. The first wife married him when he was a fisherman; on her dc he was a police sergeant. For his 2nd wife he was a police sergeant when they married, a police chief ( retired ) when she died. Finally, when he died, he was a retired police sergeant.
