Lauders in Perth or Falkirk

Hello Meryl

On the IGI, there's a birth of a John Lauder on 18th December 1852 in Falkirk to parents William Lauder and Janet Mackay.

Also on the IGI, there is a marriage of William Lauder and Janet McKay in Blackford, Perth on 27th January, 1850.

Could be your John's parents - fingers crossed! (I may be wrong - however, it was John's middle name - Mckay/Mackay - that's set me down this road).

Thanks for your reply and Yes, John is my G Grandfather and Janet his wife. It is great that people had second names that were so distinctive, which is not always the case for the 1700 and 1800s.

Hi there

You mention that you have the date of marriage but you didn't mention whether you had obtained a copy of their marriage certificate. This is available to purchase and view online or print off and/or download from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for a few credits. The marriage certificate will contain the information you'll need to locate John and Jane's parents and help you to work backwards. Not only will you learn their names but also the mothers' maiden names and whether the parents were still living at the time of their childrens 1874 marriage.

Thanks for the comments. However, I tried that avenue and got the copy of the banns only. Where should I go to get the marriage record, noting that it was in 1850, before the date noted in Scotlands People?

I have to presume that William's siblings remained in Scotland when John McKay Lauder & his wife (Jane Bradley) moved to NZ in 1876. It is those siblings that I am looking for...

I am confused as to whether you are looking for John's siblings or his father William's siblings. If John's, here is a start following them forward every census:

Thank you Sarah for all your work. It was very helpful. I was looking for both sets of siblings in fact but should start with John's.
Now back to the Census info, both John and David went to NZ in 1875 hence they do not appear in the census of 1881. Duncan (married to Margaret McPherson in 1882) went to Queensland at a later date - not sure when. Census may be able to help here?
By 1901, Willam had died (1891 - headstone is in Perth Cemetery) and Janet died in 1897 at Peterhead.
A younger sister, Margaret, appears to be the one married to Edward Hershaw, or Kershaw or Kirshaw as you have noted. My guess would be Kershaw?
The last sibling was Janet McLaren Lauder who apparently married a David Winchester and had 4 children (David, Janet, William and James).

Sory this is so long, but one other thing that has been puzzling us here in NZ is that there is no Death Certif in NZ for John McKay Lauder, my G Grandfather. He apparently abandoned his family (4 young children) in NZ about 1886 and he may have gone back to Scotland. So how would I go about finding a death cert for him in Scotland?

By 1901, Willam had died (1891 - headstone is in Perth Cemetery) and Janet died in 1897 at Peterhead.

So that was her... Do you know why she was in Peterhead? Who was the informant on the death certificate?

I have been having a look for William's siblings tonight.

As I'm sure you've seen on the IGI, William Lauder's birth:

It turns out to be a rather confusing task to find the rest of David Lauder and Margaret Anderson's children. This is one set of spelling differences that the IGI is not able to cope with, so a search for Lauder will not get you all the children. I had to finally search for the children of Margaret Anderson and David [no surname] to find most of these children. Even that didn't get them all, since Margaret's last name isn't always given. So far I have the births of 6 siblings for William. Only one more child to that couple with the standard spelling in the IGI:

Okay, here I am back again, with the 1861 records:

By 1861 Margaret Anderson appears to have died. David is living with Stewart & Helen and family.

On Scotland's People there is a Marg* Lauder other surname Anderson who died in Blackford in 1861. Birth year: 1797. It would be worth looking at to find out her parents' names, since I can't seem to find her birth.
