Sounds intense. What a pity they would need to jump through those hoops.

Re: Shocking State of Affairs in Edinburgh
Much as it caused me lots of confusion trying to get details of a grave at Highgate in London - the "friends of Highgate" that now run access to same probably have the right idea. May have changed since I got some information but they then charged 10 pounds to provide any details re a death and (I think) another 25 pounds to clean up the area to access the grave and escort you to see the grave (tricky when you live in Australia). I did receive a photo of 2 headstones (side by side) for which I am extremely grateful. The surrounding area has certainly "run wild".
http://www.highgate-cemetery.org/index. ... e-searches (allowing for credit card payments could net them much more I would think - but perhaps they have more to do than can be handled without same)
As always, there have to be people willing to take on the work involved. The majority of council run cemeteries in my areas of interest in Australia seem to be well maintained in terms of maintenance of the surrounds. Many are still currently in use - and obviously only extend back c. 200 years or less. As seems to happen eveywhere the vandalism of headstones continues. Repair or updating of the latter are the responsibility of relatives not the councils.

Re: Shocking State of Affairs in Edinburgh
My grandmother moved to Australia in 1928. Tracing down my roots there, I found a couple of her by marriage relatives (she went to Australia after her husband died in 1918) She remarried five years after her arrival there. It was rather strange communicating, because anything I wanted to know was just not answered. So - I asked if I could have a picture of her gravesite, and was sent back a nice looking headstone picture A while later I was in touch with the postmaster, just trying to get information, like where she lived, etc. She was buried in the Presp. area of the Peak Hill Australia graveyard, and this very nice man took it upon himself to take a picture of her gravesite. Well!- while the stone is in good shape the rest of the grave is in shambles. I told the by marriage relatives (by letter) how I felt about that, but of course never got a reply. I think the postmaster had method in what he did. There has never been a reply. The upside of all this is the attachment I feel to an ancestor I have never met. She was my grandmother, my father's mom.

Hello Lynne,
Just for interest, Peak Hill General Cemetery gravestone photographs, and those for many other of the smaller cemeteries in New South Wales, and some for elsewhere in Australia, are now available for free at Australian Cemeteries Index http://austcemindex.com/
All the best,
Alan

Thank you Alan! I did not know about the access you gave me. Although there is no picture available, I was able to update missing information. Who would have thought? I am one very pleased lady just now. Again, thank you, it is interesting when information is shared where or what it can lead to.

Re: Shocking State of Affairs in Edinburgh
Hi again Alan:
To update on my grandmother's grave. I thought I would take a peek in the records of Peak Hill cemetery to see if the additions had been added to the records., Yes, indeed they have been. Now the records show she was a widow of my grandfather David Bartram, where he died, where and date she was born and that she is a Mother. There is now a picture of her headstone, that I was able to copy, and it has been changed from the one I have a picure of, so maybe my letter to her step family that I sent a few years ago about the deplorable stae of her grave did something, because it is definately not the same, and is quite nice. I also have a picture of the graveyard. I am so at peace with this subject now, and I cannot thank you enough. A fellow by the name of John Arthur visited and photographed every visible inscription in August 2007. He said that the site was in good order, obviously well maintained and that each portion was signposted, however, he found no row markers. There is information on how to find the cemetery, who it is administered by, and how to contact them, and much more.

That’s okay Lynne, glad I could help,
It’s a very handy site. It’s always nice to find a few unexpected extra bits of information like that.
All the best,
Alan
