Falkirk Graveyards

Post by maggiehill » Fri May 25, 2007 7:42 pm

I have just looked at Janet’s wedding certificate and noticed that she was married at West Linton according to the Free Church of Scotland with the Minister coming from the Free Church of Scotland at Kirkurd.

Falkirk has also checked their paper records but has not found any information and say that there are no separate records for church denominations, records are listed by date and have no indication of denomination.

Is it possible for her to be buried in Falkirk and not recorded. If so she may have been buried at a Free Church of Scotland in Falkirk, as she died at Booth Place in December 1928 (1926 on my original posting). Which would be the nearest cemetery to her home for her to be buried, if where she died was her home.

Is it possible that she could be buried in a completely different place away from Falkirk i.e. West Linton.

We have been informed by a descendant of Alexander and Janet Dawson
that when Janet died in December 1928 at Falkirk that she was buried in West Linton. Also when her husband Alexander died in 1930 at Middlesbrough his coffin was taken by a niece on a train to be buried with Janet at West Linton.

We have recently searched both grave yards but could not find a headstone for them. Perhaps they were buried without a headstone.

Who should I contact to find who is buried at West Linton.

West Linton was in Peebles-shire, and is now in the Scottish Borders Council area. It looks like the cemetery records are held in Galashiels. There are contact details on the following webpage.

All the best,

Thanks AndrewP

I have e-mailed Scottish Borders Council hoping that they have the information or knows who has.

I also sent a e-mail to the Minister at St Andrews Church at West Linton a while ago but have not received a reply to date.

Maggie

The best person to contact for cemetery information would be Mrs Diane MUNRO at the cemeteries office

dmunro2ATscotborders.gov.uk

Best wishes

Have received a reply from Mrs Diane Munro saying that they cannot locate any details for Alexander Dawson or Janet Lando or Dawson. The records for West Linton Cemetery started in 1918. This does not mean they are not buried there, as records from years ago are not always as up-to-date as we would like them to be.
She also said it does mean I have no record of where they are interred.

I will have to keep digging and have another look at why the Minister from Kirkurd (about 3 miles from WL) married them according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland at the Lando,s cottage at West Linton.
