Govan Churchyard Cemetery Map

Post by ninatoo » Mon Sep 17, 2007 10:00 pm

There used to be an old map, available online, of the Govan Churchyard. On it was written the names of those buried there. I had a copy on my computer once but it has disappeared through various crashes.

Does anyone know what I am talking about, and doers anyone have a copy of the map please?

Can't say I've ever come across it Nina.

Do you mean Govan Parish Church graveyard which has mainly medieval graves?

I remember wandering round them after Sunday School when I was a wee girl. Must have had the bug even then.

Hi Annette,

Well, I am not sure of the exact name of the place but I do know it was Govan and the cemetery was roughly circular in shape. I do know that one like that still exists. I am not sure if it is the same one.

I recall being fascinated when I found it as it was one of the first 'finds' on the internet that keyed me into just how much I might be able to find out via the computer. I now recall having a link to it and one day I clicked and it was no longer active.

Anyway, if anyone remembers it...it had a map of the markers with the name from the MI (I presume) so you could literally use the map to find a grave.

I am just curious now as I would like to see if any ancestors were buried there. I didn't know enough back then!

Hi Nina:

It may be worthwhile to have a check:

http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Search/sea ... graveyards

I remember looking at the Necropolis map, but except for a few, stones are not generally identified.

Hello Nina,

Various links to rootsweb discussion board re people who have info about Govan Churchyard.
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/LA ... 1115545966
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/LA ... 0888047663
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/LA ... 1092934803

and this one with an apparently dead link to the plan you seem to be after,
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/SC ... 1052069385
however the site is still alive http://www.govanold.org.uk/ but couldn’t see the map there.

Hope this helps a bit,
Alan

Back again Nina,

If you go to http://www.archive.org/index.php and search the domain http://www.govanold.org.uk for ‘all media types’ then in the result click on ‘Feb 01, 2001’ then on’Articles’ then on ‘Govan Old Parish Church Graveyard by Betty Willshire, M.A., F.S.A. Scot’ (1992) then scroll down to the bottom of the article to the links to the maps you probably want.

Or to cut a long story short try http://web.archive.org/web/200111131921 ... eyard.html

Alan

p.s. Lots of interesting articles to read if you go the long way. The link to articles may have been removed by the site because of the load on the system from large downloads etc.

Currie!

That is the one!!! Thank you very much! I have been wanting to have another look at that map for a couple of years now, so maybe I should print it at some point.

Thanks also Paddyscar and Nelmit for the replies.

Nina :)
