Indexed cemeteries?

Post by Dennis » Sat Sep 29, 2007 3:11 am

Hi:)

I was just looking at a recent newsletter from OneGreatFamily and noticed this :

Many cemeteries have been indexed by volunteers, and the indexes are searchable online on sites like www.usgenweb.org and www.familysearch.org.

Has anyone found where the indexed cemeteries are located on either, or both, of the websites?

Hello Dennis,

USGenWeb has links to State sites which have full or partial Tombstone etc. indexing by volunteers but it seems you have to go to each one and look rather than there being what you would call an online search.

I can't see anything on familysearch unless they're talking about something available via the LDS libraries. Familysearch are planning to put a whole lot of new stuff online so maybe it's something that hasn't happened yet.

Perhaps not what you are looking for but:

I've had some good luck with Find A Grave:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi

They are mostly U.S. but do have some in Scotland and England. I found a couple of relatives who died in WWI and were buried in France.

Hi all,
I usually go first to www.interment.net when looking for a U.S. grave. Again, there are some from other countries, but you would have to be lucky...
Regards,
Sarah

Lesley,

I took your advice and looked at the talkingscot site. Found the rest of my 2x great grandmother's family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some how I overlooked the Peterhead Death Indexes the first time that I looked over this site months ago. Tonight as I was reading through that whole bunch of Milnes I saw the name Gordon in the far right column next to William Milne. The death in question was Robertson Milne who died in 1873. I thought he was a male, but when I pulled the death certificate, I discovered that he was a she and her parents were William Milne and Mary Gordon who were my 2x great grandmother Janet Milne's parents also! This sent me back to ancesty where I found Mary Gordon Milne with her daughters Robertson and Martha in 1851. I also found Robertson in 1861 and in 1871 with two children. That's as far as I've gotten tonight.

Also discovered that Mary Gordon was born in Glasgow in 1791. Funny but there is a Mary Gordon with parents John Gordon and Mary Lyle or Dyle in this place call Kilbarchen, Renfrew. Now, where have I heard of that place before? Hmmm......

Carol
Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Hi Carol

It is possible it was not there then - I update the list whenever I find anything worth adding. :D

Really pleased you found something! \:D/
