In last week's Falkirk Herald it was reported that a local business is to use the Tattie Kirk to continue trading from now until the end of December. I wonder what will happen to it after that??
The following is an extract from Falkirk Local History Website:
THE TATTIE KIRK This unusual building dates from 1806 when it was built by members of the Anti-Burgher movement. The building has not been used as a church since 1879, when the congregation moved to Grahams Road Church. It has since been used as a joiner's workshop and a store. The adjoining graveyard, which contains many interesting stones, went out of use in 1869. Octagonal Churches, while unusual, are not unknown in Scotland and they are said to have been built to this unusual plan so "there was no corner for the Devil to hide in". Why the building is known as the "Tattie" Kirk is uncertain, but it has been suggested that the site may have been a potato field before the church was built, that the Minister's stipend was paid in part in vegetables or that it was at one time used to store potatoes.

Keep us posted on this one, if you can. I always worry about the grave stones....
Best wishes

There has been a survey of the gravestones in the 'Tattie Kirk' graveyard.
I understand that the results are in the Falkirk Local History Society book,
Calatria No. 12 Summer 1998.
For all the years I've lived in this area, do you know I've never been to see the Tattie Kirk, next trip to town perhaps....

Don't get too excited Wilma - it's only a toty wee place and usually full of rubbish. The council cuts the grass (I think) but as for any sort of other clean-ups - not a sausage.
If you park beside the big new flooring place (where Mathieson's bakery used to be), you'll see railings on the left as you head towards the lane taking you to the High Street. The gate to get into it is usually locked and the key is available from the 'Almond Tree' Bookshop.
The majority of the stones recorded by the Mitchells in the late sixties/early seventies (pre-1855 MI's East Stirlingshire) are still there, some still legible, some not.

Hi Diane,
Welcome to Talking Scot!
I don't think the sale of the building itself will affect the burial ground as they're quite separate.
This poor neglected wee graveyard was fenced off from the Kirk a good while ago. The Kirk building is accessed from the Cow Wynd but the graveyard can only be accessed through the path leading behing the shop I mentioned earlier.
Where did you find it listed for sale? Somebody will probably convert it into a house

Hi Diane:
Welcome to TalkingScot!
I've just had a look at the vendor's site, and they've had a re-think on the price. It's now on for offers over £200,000! Rapidly rising real estate, indeed!
