Where is Cargill graveyard?

Post by Kathykins » Wed Oct 24, 2007 8:54 am

Hi all,

Just arrived back in merrie olde England from the beautiful land of Perthshire. It was a wonderful trip, and I made some news friends, found lots of information, but one branch of the family still eludes me!

I spent nearly two days of this holiday hunting around for Cargill graveyard - I know there was one, because a stone in the kirkyard at Collace mentions someone being interred there! I did manage to find what looked like the old church at Cargill, now turned into a private residence, but there was no-one home to ask for help!

Does anyone have any suggestions? Has it moved perhaps, or merged with another nearby graveyard? I didn't have any luck at Burrelton, which shares a church with Cargill these days either.

At least it's an excuse to go back! :D

Hi Kathy

To get to the cargill graveyard you leave perth on the blairgowrie road.
Keep heading towards blairgowrie approx 8 miles from Perth just before you cross the river isla cargill is on your left hand side, it looks for all the world like a farm entrance, the graveyard is down by the river if there is something in particular you are looking for I can have a look if you want

Couldn't find a definitive location for the graveyard but the web site I have pasted is from the Perth & Kinross Council list of which offices maintain the info. This might help :D

Hello
The graveyard at Cargill is very close to what was the old church, across the road there is a dyke with a high hedge and a gate through that gate is the graveyard. To find the one in use now you have to continue on the A93 towards Blairgowrie for about 1 mile then turn right towards Woodside you will find the graveyard at a sharp right hand bend on the left.

Hope this helps

Thank you all! I've passed on the instructions to my father, who is still on holiday there until Friday (some people have all the luck), so hopefully he will be able to find the missing ones! Bruce, if he doesn't have any luck I'd be very grateful for any assistance you could give. Are you very far from there?

I did find the newer cemetery at Woodside and Burrelton - we were staying just down the road from it but the furthest it seemed to go back was about 1965, so no luck with my relatives.

I don't like to ask how many years ago, but I don't suppose you knew any Morrisons? They farmed at Whitefield for many years, and another farm whose name escapes me. The other half of the family are the Scotts, who lived in and around Burrelton and farmed at Keithick.
