Hi Dennis
The NBI is, as far as I'm aware, a volunteer project undertaken by the Federation of Family History Societies,
http://www.ffhs.org.uk/projects/nbi/nbi-overview.php
, including FHSs in Scotland.

As far as I'm aware it is still an ongoing project.
Best wishes
Lesley

See also http://www.tayroots.com/ResearchYourRoots/burials.aspA cumulative edition is produced at approximately three-yearly intervals and a parallel project (not yet published) is taking place in Scotland under the supervision of the Scottish Association for Family History Societies.
So far publication on CDROM has been made of the NBI for England and Wales, (and data also released on pay-per-view web sites: e.g. http://www.findmypast.com/national-buri ... on?redef=0 ) with some FHS in Scotland also releasing data; e.g. The Fife Death Index CD ROM published by Fife FHS, and Renfrewshire :The Scottish Association of Family History Societies (SAFHS) is currently co-ordinating a major project to develop a National Burial Index, relating to pre-1855 records. This will eventually be available on CD ROM. Although this will help to confirm that burials took place in parish burial grounds, it will not, unfortunately, indicate the location of the lair.

Hi Lesley,
Thank you for the information
What about from 1855 onward, has that already been indexed?

hi Dennis
Sometimes post-1855 info turns up in MI books for instance, as it may be on the same gravestone as pre-1855 info, but as far as I know there is no post-1855 index as such. You would need to contact individual cemeteries or local authorities who would probably hold cemetery or lair information.
Best wishes
Lesley
As far as I'm aware, the idea of indexing the pre-1855 deaths is because that is often the point at which documented evidence tends to become a bit thinner on the ground for most researchers. After 1855 you have a good chance in both Scotland and England of finding the death indexed in the Statutory Registers for deaths. What about from 1855 onward, has that already been indexed?
