I will be in Glasgow in April and want to find section 2 lair 95 of Sighthill cemetery. I have been given a telephone # to make an appointment to be guided. But not sure when I will get there. Are the gates closed after hours? Can anyone give me a map or directions at least to section 2? I am looking for the grave of Kezia Walkinshaw and any of her Campbell relatives who died in the late 19 cent.
Also I am willing to take photos of headstones for anyone if the grave comes with explicit finding instructions as Sighthill is large.
Thanks for any help at all,
Melody

Hello Melody,
I couldn’t find a cemetery plan and indications so far are that there isn’t one. If nothing turns up have a look at Google Earth. There are excellent images of the cemetery. At least that will give you a good idea of the layout. Cemetery area appears to be 12 acres and location is:
Lat. 55°52'36.31"N
Long. 4°14'7.71"W
Appears to be pedestrian access at all times (?), cemetery looks well cared for, safe and inviting but there are several old reports of undesirables hanging around including.

Experience of another.

Some interesting reading in this 1840s Google Book.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Alan,
I appreciate your efforts. My research says much the same. Thanks for the links. It looks as though I will have to make an appointment. I do wonder though why a map is not made. All the other cemeteries I have visited give you a photocopied map and off you go.
All that vandalism is sad. I live in a very small town where two rivers meet. A simple cross memorial was set up at the convergence of the rivers where the deceased loved to go. In no time at all it was destroyed. There was a public outcry against this destruction. A subsequent memorial was erected for someone else and it has remained over a year. Maybe the jerk got the message, or felt regret?

It is much too large to have one useful map. You would have to have several maps at different scales. They would spend half their time producing all these maps. If you don't want to make an appointment you could try getting general verbal directions over the phone and ask them to put a marker by it.

I know it is late for a reply but...I was in Sighthill today and did see this grave. If you need a photo please email me in the next couple of days and I will get one for you. Otherwise if you need directions to the site, I can give you those as my relatives are in the same section.
Cheers

Re: map of Sighthill
Thank you Dollard, and Julia,
I didn't know you could ask for a marker or I would have. The actual guide was never in though I phoned at different times, but a very nice man did show up and help me, he went above and beyond the call of duty. It was quite an adventure, and i've written an article about it, altogether a very good experience. The reason you can see the stone now is that the guide managed to pull it up from it's face down position. Thanks for offering to photograph it, it was a very kind thought. This May I had an adventure finding a grave in the eastern section of the Southern Necropolis.
Thanks everyone,
Melody

I did not know there were anymore posts to this as my e-mail didn't let me know, I just happened to be trolling through this fabulous forum, so sorry it took so long to reply.

Just back from Glasgow and managed to get a map of Sighthill with the sections notated. Also visited the Southern Necropolis and found the graves I wanted in the Central section but the Western section is a mess.

Hi there,
I did a different post on the Southern Necropolis, but I was there in May and the Eastern section was a disaster area, luckily I did find the ones I wanted though. How did you get a map of Sighthhill, are the council making them now?
