Very Lucky Find!

Post by Alien » Wed Mar 12, 2008 4:56 pm

If you take a look at my last post 'Disappointing Discovery' you'll see that I had at last found the cemetery my grandparents were buried in but when I went to visit the lair there was no headstone. As my father had been a stone mason I found this quite surprising, even though they are my mother's parents, not his.
I decided to re-contact the records office and check again that I had been given the correct lair number. Well, you can imagine my surprise when I was told I had not! The lair was in Section 'O', not 'B' which I'd been given. Don't get spooked out everyone, but I just knew it was the wrong one.
I am now delighted to report that I have found the lair, complete with headstone and inscriptions.

Somehow just a plot with no stone is a great disappointment (been there, done that! ) in the same way that finding out that a family house no longer exists is always a disappointment - being able to see and touch the tangible evidence makes a big difference, and gives us a link to the past, so that is great news Alien. :D

Best wishes
Lesley

Wonderful news Alien.
My great-grandfather was a stone-mason too & he made his own headstone-just somebody else had to inscribe the date.
Anyway it was damaged in the 1967 storm & my Grandpa & his brothers decided it was too expensive to repair.I remember it resting against the back wall of the cemetery-my Mum was a regular to visit her rellies graves. Then one day it had gone.
I have a magnificent headstone for my GGGreat-grandparents(paternal this time) He also was a stonemason-he chose a more sheltered spot for the family plot. It is still standing & very easilly readable.I didn't realise it was there until last year despite passing it at least a hundred times.
How spooky too I have just looked at your profile-guess where my ancestors are buried? Old Kilpatrick.

Joette,
I've just found your reply (for some reason I wasn't notified although I've got the box ticked for replies). Anyway, it's amazing that your relatives are buried in Old Kilpatrick. I live a few hundred yards from the cemetery. It really is a small world :)

I have often wondered if anyone has, or is allowed to do any restoration to head stones?
Such as redoing faded inscriptions.

Wini, that's a very good question. Can't wait to hear some answers from our friends on TS.

Ages ago Mary E found out for me what you are allowed to do. I don't have the details any more but my memory is that it just involves brushing with a soft brush to remove build up of lichen etc. I'm sure someone will have more specialist knowledge.
