be able to tell me how to go about finding a recent grave with very little information.
Someone I know in Canada would like to find her fathers grave from 1995.
All we know is where he lived and died (Glasow) and when.
How would I go about finding out where he's buried? We're assuming he was buried as he was catholic - is that a reasonable assumption?

Hi MissPoohs, I phoned around my local cemeteries about 5 yr ago, making same sort of enquiries, about my grandparents.Gave them as much info as I had about them, and they were able to give me lair numbers!
I wasnt charged then for a search, but, maybe now theres a search fee!
Also being a Catholic, you used to always get buried, but now a lot more are being cremated! My Mum and Dad both were!
Another thing, sometimes people arent always put to rest, locally.
They may have wanted to go back to where they had been brought up,etc.
Sorry cant be of more help, probably someone else could give you more on your enquiry!
Cheers Nancy

Thanks Nancy - I'll use the info I have and see where it gets me.
He was born and raised in Glasgow and his family are all from the area so I'm fairly sure he's in Glasgow somewhere.

Hi Miss Poohs,
If you have a date, or reasonable date reange for his death, then it may be worth looking up the Glasgow Herald for a funeral notice. That should give you a date and place of burial or cemation. I am assuming that the Herald is on microfilm in the Mitchell Library.
I think it used to be the case that Roman Catholics were more likely to be buried rather than cremated, but I think in more recent years that economics have pushed more people into going for cremation, regardless of their faith.
All the best,
AndrewP

Bear in mind that if he was living near the edge of the city he could have been buried outside the cities cemetries.
At one time some of the graveyards were in such a state people avoided them if they could - my Mother for instance is buried in Paisley, though she had lived in the city all her life.
If you could give us a general area we might be able to narrow things down a little for you.

He died at 1 Belmont Road Glasgow G21 3AY, which is now a Marie Curie Hospice, not sure if it was back in 1995 though, his home address was Shawpark St Glasgow G20 9DA, which is off Maryhill Road.
I have no idea what the closest cemetary to those would be?
I'll deffo be checking up on the papers from when he died, that's a great tip
Thanks guys.

With that address, the most likely place would be the Cemeteries at Cadder.
My 1980's map shows: Lambhill Cemetery, St Kentigern's RC Cemetery, Western Necropolis and a Cemetorium
All in the one area of ground!
Funily enough I had found that on the map just the other day - after watching a VERY old Taggart DVD and trying to work out where the Crematorium was.
