Newington (Echo Bank) Cemetery in Edinburgh

Post by Camilla » Sun May 25, 2008 8:48 pm

I'm interested in finding the graves of various family members who lived in Newington, but I don't know for certain whether they would have been buried in the main Newington cemetery or elsewhere.

I'm aware that the MIs for that cemetery are available as a CD-ROM; if I knew my people were probably there, I'd be glad to support the genealogy society and buy a copy, but the price is a little steep for me to take a gamble right now. Could anyone assist me with lookups? Hope it's OK to ask.

I actually went along to the cemetery the other day in an optimistic mood, planning to search around on foot, but it's quite big and rather a lonely place to roam around -- particularly with a baby in a pram! Left after 15 mins feeling foolish

Thanks for reading.

Hi Camilla
I note you are in Edinburgh. You maybe already know this , but just incase not, you can go along to the Scottish Genealogy Society (Victoria Terrace) and use their library as a non-member for a day for £5. They have a lot of Edinburgh based info, so well worth the cost if you prepare your notes and keep your head down for the day! They have the largest collection of MIs, published and many unpublished, in Scotland.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Camilla,

Another place for you to visit (free of charge) is the Edinburgh Room of the Central Library on George IV Bridge. There, assuming you know the dates of death of the Newington people, you could check the Evening News and Scotsman archive newspapers on microfilm, looking for the funeral notices. That should tell you where they were buried (or cremated if more recently).

You did right to leave Newington Cemetery if you felt unsafe, and no need to feel foolish. It is not a place I could recommend for a lone woman (or lone plus child) to be wondering around. Too isolated from view by its high walls and many trees.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Camilla:

The Edinburgh Public Library also has a copy of the CD available in the Edinburgh Room. The catalogue also lists more than 40 other monumental inscriptions materials.

In the keyword box enter: monumental inscriptions edinburgh for a full listing.

Added later: Since it's on CD, it may also be available through the in-house computers, at other branches.

Also, forgot to include the info on the item: Newington cemetery, Edinburgh, Scotland [electronic resource] : gravestone inscriptions, 1846-2000 / edited, tranlated and indexed by Karl Ian Ransome / transcribed by members of the Scottish Genealogy Society

Hi

I found the crematorium officers extremely helpful in Edinburgh - email:
mortonhallcrematorium@edinburgh.gov.uk
I gave as much detail as I could about my relatives and they even provided me with maps of the cemetery indicating the appropriate plot (at no cost).

I also found Lothian Health Services archivists very helpful in providing extra info about relatives who had died in hospital in the area - cause of death/next of kin etc. These archives can be viewed by prior arrangement. Email-
lhsa@ed.ac.uk

Good luck

Thanks so much, all of you -- I didn't know about Victoria Terrace so will definitely go there, and I'll head to the Edinburgh Room too. I've been there before to look at other materials but hadn't fully explored what they had to offer.

Looking forward to getting on with all this just as soon as I have a day off from motherhood duties!
