A Clerihew for Carol

In Riddrie Park Cemetery, Glasgow.

"Erected by David MacFarlane in loving memory of his wife Caroline Clerihew died 24th October 1914 aged 63 years
David MacFarlane died 13th December 1929 aged 80
Their daughter Isabella died 13th October 1954 aged 63 years, beloved wife of John Sneddon."

Who could she be? I need an emoticon shuffling through piles of papers! She would have been born in 1851 so she isn't one of my immediate family, but the only other Caroline I'm aware of went to England.

Hello Carol,

When you’ve finished that lot you can have a look at a stack of Clerihew’s (people) in the Maitland Mercury. There’s about 35 assorted items in the 1850-89 period, probably to do with those Singleton people mentioned in the London Times? legal notice that had some connection to Scotland from ages ago. http://www.nla.gov.au/ndp/search/

Actually I’m not sure if there’s anything interesting. There should be a lot more there later when the site is complete.

No loan yet, but I do have to wait for my new credit card month to start on Thursday. From what I see on Ancestry, this Caroline was born in Gibraltar so I won't be able to get a birth cert. unless I order it, but I remember from previous searches that there were a couple of Clerihew families that gave all their children middle names. One lot had an English mother and she moved them all back home after her husband died. I'll have to go through my stacks of notes after I get home from quilting guild today.

Alan, thanks for the link. I'll follow up on it soon. I've been busy with my Finnish relatives for the past month. Someone gave me a link to a group which is transcribing all the parish records in Finland for births, marriages and deaths and putting them online--Free!! Picture a middle aged kid in a chocolate shop with a coupon for a free large assortment box and you're looking at me hunting up my Finnish relatives!

Had a look at the Maitland Mercury articles. They are fun to read if nothing else. It appears the William Clerihew and his wife who's name I've forgotten for the moment, were living on a farm property called Tea Tree. They kept busy-- wrangling strayed stock for him and collecting prizes for needlework at the agricultural fair for her! Apparently her Joss relatives were in the neighborhood also and for a time in business with William.

Thanks for the link. It is one of the best of the newspaper search engines I've used so far. I've bookmarked it even though there aren't too many Clerihews in Austrailia.

Hi everyone,

In keeping with the Clerihew's preference for obscurity, Caroline and her parents are proving very difficult! I did find her death certificate on SP. Her parents were John Clerihew, sanitary inspector and Mary Morrell. Caroline died in the district of Dennistoun, Glasgow. Her husband David McFarlane was a journeyman Joiner and Drill instructor 12th Battalion H.L.I. (?) They were residents of 9 Bannatyne (?) Ave. at the time of her death.

I couldn't pull a marriage OPR for John Clerihew and Mary Morrell. Since the census shows Caroline as being born in Gibraltar, I think it's a good bet that John was a soldier early on. Mary could easily be English and who knows where they were married! There is a family of Clerihews in Glasgow--James and Margaret and children--no John--but they are having children in the 1860's, too late for Caroline's father. Could be a brother or cousin I suppose, but John must have been hiding from the census taker!

Another mystery continues!

If you google "Clerihew Morrell Gibraltar" there's an entry on the Perthshire pages at Ancestry from someone interested in this couple.

You never know what she may have found out since she posted!

I just got back to my computer today. I'll follow up on the rootschat link though it was posted in 2003. I'm still curious about John and Mary. It seems to me that when I was searching newspapers earlier on, I came across some mention of Clerihews in Gibraltar.

I'm going in three different directions right now. A cousin of mine from Finland has contacted me recently. This morning we had an email from a cousin of my husband whom he didn't know existed and the cousin lives right here in Alabama! Couldn't believe that! And I have this new Clerihew puzzle. This is so much more fun than brick walls!

I checked the 19C newspapers for a Clerihew with a Gibraltar connection but didn’t have any luck. The search thing probably isn’t detecting the Gibraltar word. Do you remember anything else about it?
