Hi Ina,
How interesting! I would never have thought about who owned copyright for an obituary. That said, I would have imagined the originator of the wording, which I thought would be the person who placed the ad in the newspaper, would be the one to own copyright. You learn something every day.!

Interesting comments on the newspaper's site as well, with a few people saying that surely the person who wrote the obituary (presumably a family member) holds the copyright. However, the newspaper will hold copyright over the style and given that it seems that even punctuation has been copied, then this is a breach of copyright.
