I wonder if anyone can offer any assistance. My Auntie Gabby died in the Newington area of Edinburgh in 1983.Where would be the most obvious place for her to be buried/cremated and i think she used her maiden name at Death,Dupre.Rather than her married name,Adie, why would she do that?Slainte,David

Hi David,

Possibly Newington Cemetery, East Preston Street Cemetery, or Mortonhall Crematorium if she was buried or cremated locally.

It may be worth your while visiting the Edinburgh Room in Edinburgh Central Library and looking at the microfilms of The Scotsman or the Evening News archives to see if there was a funeral notice printed, giving the place of burial or cremation.

Or you could try contacting the Cemetery Records office of the City of Edinburgh Council. They are based at Mortonhall Crematorium.

All the best,

AndrewP

When my very elderly aunt died earlier this year the death notice in the Aberdeen P&J was under her maiden name, and she was then described as "wife of XX". That may be similar to your aunt and just seems to be the way it was done traditionally.

Yes & it was also common for woman to be know as "Jessie Smith wife of John Jones" or to revert to their maiden names when widowed.
