Robert Wallace Barclay

Post by robertgoodlad » Thu Dec 18, 2008 11:47 pm

I am trying to trace the birth of Robert Wallace Barclay supposed to have been born 01/02/1848 in Banchory,Kincardshire.
His parents I believe were James Barclay and wife Elsie Claire Drummond.I believe James's father was Robert Kenneth Wallace Barclay.
To date all efforts to find any information on the above has has been
fruitless.
Please can anybody help as I am getting desperate and climbing up the wall.
Any helpful response would be much appreciated.
Bob

Hi Bob
and welcome to Talking Scot :D

Can you tell us where the information you have already has come from? I'm guessing it may be from a grave stone given that you have posted in this area of the forum?

Have you marriage details for Robert Barclay? Did he remain in Scotland or go elsewhere? Any idea which church he was likely to have belonged to e.g. was he Church of Scotland, Baptist, Roman Catholic, Free Church etc? (this may explain why you're not finding him)

On IGI there is this entry which has a few similarities, enough to make me look twice..

ROBERT WALKER BARCLAY

Event(s):
Birth: 01 DEC 1849
Christening: 16 DEC 1849 Bervie, Kincardine, Scotland

Parents:
Father: JAMES BARCLAY
Mother: ELSPET COOPER

- quite a few similarities, but it may just be a coincidence.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Bob,

The 1851 census places the family in Kinneff & Catterline parish, Kincardineshire. This gives Robert as a 2 year old born in Bervie, with an older borther and sister, and parents James and Elspet.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thank you for the two replies. The info we have came from a death notice
printed in The Statesman of Calcutta in India. His name was definitely as shown above and he was born in Aberdeen on 1st August 1848.
However we have another source that states 1843?He joined the Army and was in the 1st Battalion Regiment of Foot with a registration number 1584.He was subsequently posted to India and whilst there married a Frances Louisa Bond-supposed American- and they had four children.
His parents were definitely James Barclay and Elsie Claire Drummond-the eldest daughter was called Louisa Wallace Drummond Barclay. We also believe that James's father was a Robert Kenneth Wallace Barclay.
Wishing you every success in trying to come up with some news.
Many thanks
Bob

Thank you so much for your prompt replies, the one that seems to be of
great interest is the Stonehaven Genealogy website which unfortunately
no longer accepts correspondence. We,have, however sent emails to the
two people mentionned on the site-Jennifer Ryan and Beverley Barclay.
Their correspondence on the website was dated 2002 and we are hoping
for some replies.

Attention Andrew P
Many thanks for your message which I have only now really looked at in any depth.
What are the chances of looking at the 1851 Census?Elsie could be another name for Elspet or Elspeth.
Does one have to subscribe to the Scotland Government Records?
Await your reply.

Elsie is very likely to be a familiar variation of Elspet or Elspeth

The decennial censuses (1841 to 1901) in Scotland can be seen on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis. All except 1881, you see digitised images of the original pages. 1881 (in the meantime) is transcriptions only. Other records are available there too - see their website for more information.

There are various other websites where census transcriptions can be found, mostly for a fee. Some transcriptions are good, others are decidedly ropey.

All the best,

AndrewP
