Abbey Churchyard Coupar Angus-anyone have access?

Post by janneymc » Mon Feb 23, 2009 7:33 pm

Hi, I have been trying to find the graves for my ancestors George and Jessie[Ross] and some of their children who died in Coupar Angus. The Perth council say they are not at Grampian View Cemetery but may be in the Abbey Churchyard. Does anyone have access to these records to check for me please? I live in Canada so cannot easily check myself. I'd be most grateful for any assistance. George died 1920, Jessie 1924, Alice Munro Ross 1952 and several babies in the 1870s and 80s.
Cheers
Jan

Hi Jan
Have you tried asking Perth council where you might be able to find the information? The dates you have given are too late for them to turn up in any published MI book which all tend to concentrate more on the pre-1855 burials.

The interment registers for both are available at the local council offices in Blairgowrie.

Hi Jan & Lesley

The last time I did a search for burial records in Perth all records are now held by the keeper of records at Perth Cremetorium you should be able to contact them here.
The details from abbey cemetry should be held here as well.

If not let me know and I will see if I can get out and have a look.

HI Bleckie and Leslie, I did email the Perth Crematorium and they couldn't find them in their records. However they said they didn't have the Abbey records only the Grampain View. They could be in the Abbey records but I can't find out where to access them. I'd be grateful for any help.
Cheers

So is Abbey not included in the Coupar Angus records held at Blairgowrie?

What about trying the Local Studies Dept. at Dundee library?
http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/library/localhistory
They apparently have some burial records - if they do not have the area you are looking for they may be able to advise where you might find those records.

There is also Angus Archives
http://www.angus.gov.uk/history/archives/default.htm
Again, even if they do not hold the records you are looking for, they may be able to advise with regards to where they are kept.

Or maybe just start locally and contact
Coupar Angus Library

However, I just phoned the number given here http://www.pkc.gov.uk/Law+and+licensing ... remations/ for Bereavement services and they say they hold the Abbey burial records computerised, but pehaps not for the 1800s. They need names (maiden name of Jessie would be a useful cross check, and probably dates, I reckon) to do a search though. An email address is also given on that page.

Best wishes

Just phoned them again as I'd found the details from Anne's post;
George Ross, retired joiner, married to Jessie Gray (Jessie is a version of Janet) died 7th January 1920 at Cothall, Couper Angus aged 74, son of Donald Ross, manager of limekilns and Elizabeth Ross m.s. Falconer.
There is no George Ross who died on that date showing up on their database, which including Abbey, covers 143 cemeteries in the area and goes back to at least 1896. The conclusion seems to be that either he is buried in a private burial ground in the area for which they do not hold records, or that he is buried outwith the area. No sign of Janet/Jessie either.

If you wish to follow up further, one avenue to explore via contact with the local libraries would be a possible death notice in the local newspapers which may just mention place where the funeral is to take place.

Best wishes
Lesley

ross burials

Post by janneymc » Fri Apr 17, 2009 6:13 pm

HI Leslie and Smid, THanks for following up on this. Donald and Elizabeth Ross are buried in Forres, no sign of George and Jessie there. George and Jessie married in 1870 in Coupar Angus where she is from but lived in Dundee for the first few years so its possible they are buried there with their first children who died young. According to the obit from the local paper when George died in 1920, they were members of the C.U church. What does this stand for? Their Daughter Alice Munro Ross died unmarried in Coupar Angus in 1952 and I would think she would be buried with them. George was the Provost of Coupar Angus from 1901-1904.
any help gratefully received.
cheers,
jan
