Help finding a burial in Edinburgh

Post by mvy_1 » Thu Jul 30, 2009 7:26 am

Just wondering how do I go about finding a cemetry/burial in Edinburgh. I have the death registrations but would like to know how to find which cemetry the people are buried in.

Hi Margaret

It depends on the date, but if you have the post 1855 death entries from SP and can provide name, date of death and address at time of death I suggest you contact:
Morton Hall Cemetery & Crematorium
Howden Hall Road,
Edinburgh,
EH16 6TX,
0131 664 4314

to see if they have a record of the burial and can perhaps provide a reference for the lair, so you can go and find them. They deal with council run cemeteries, but not those which are privately owned.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thank you Lesley.
My sister is planning on spending about a week in Scotland later this year so she may be able to do some research for me. Will look into it further. Thanks again for your help.

I just came back from a holiday in Edinburgh, and I called the Mortonhall Crematorium while I was there to ask about searching their records. The woman told me that if I was only asking for 1 or 2 names, and had a death date and last address, they would look in the records of the "most likely candidate" cemetery for free. You can contact them via email with queries. Don't expect them to go searching multiple cemeteries. I think that some of the old private cemeteries that had fallen into disrepair were taken over by the council.

Thank you ksyoung for the information. I shall pass that onto my sister.
