The Craigs burial ground in Corpach Fort William is where?

Post by houseworkfairy » Wed Aug 05, 2009 12:58 pm

I sent my poor nephew to look for this burial ground when he was foolish enough to be on a flying visit to Scotland at the beginning of July and he said no one local seemed to know where it was.

Anyone out there know? :D

Hi houseworkfairy
(like the name!)
According to this post on Rootsweb
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/rea ... 1189501461
Craigs Cemetery is on the North Road out of Fort William just accross from St Mary's RC Church. (GB Grid Ref NN108742).
More info and pictures here

Looks like an interesting place.

Best wishes
Lesley

I will tell him he has to go again now.

Although as it's a long way from Warwickshire he may not be too keen! Last time he drove all the way in an 800cc Matiz. But he is young.

WELLIES!!! He needs WELLIES!!! Or, at the very least, waterproof boots.

We've traipsed round all the burial grounds in the area at one time or another (including Craigs, and that description sounds accurate to me) and they all have one thing in common - they're wet!

He's very welcome, Ann

He went there when it was hot! And I'm not driving up there. I'll fly to Glasgow hire a car then drive to Fort William. It's a 5 hour drive to Glasgow from here. Also I can visit the Glasgow cemeteries as well. Riddrie I think.

He went all the way to Peterhead with his friend Peter - you can guess why - they're only 20 and well........ still a bit stupid. I only asked him to check to give them something to do other than mess about. Still he did visit the Glenfinnan monument and take photos for me. Supposedly the ancestor who settled in Fort William was a builder and built the original monument before the figure was put on it. However although family lore says there is supposedly a plaque in his memory there it has gone missing since the 1880s or so.

Incidentally I was watching Who do you think you are on the TV last night and Talking Scot had a mention! Quite a coincidence really.

And every cemetery seems to have wet grass no matter whether it looks mowed or not - must be something in the cemetery rules and regs - maybe they hose the old parts down specially for us???????????? :)

What names are you looking at up there - we always take far too many photo's just in case we make a link later. I could take a look and see what we have.

We were at the monument in Feb - wet, windy, muddy, but no midges :D
