rland Aberdeenshire - Jean Jenie (your topic Feb 21, 2007

Post by lynne smith » Thu Aug 26, 2010 12:25 am

I have just begun researching my husband's family, and by luck I found Jean Jenie's article regarding James Smith and Jane Gauld. I think this may be lucky for me because I have only managed to research back as far as James Smith of 1776. He married Jean Gauld b. 1773 in Tarland & Migvie, Aberdeenshire,Scotland. They had 6 children, John 1798, Margaret 1799, Jean 1808, Ann, 1811, Elizabeth 1813 and Helen 1815. (James's birthdate is either 1774 or 1776) I have found a record that James Smith was living in Aberdeenshire at the age of 65 (his birth date is recorded with Scotland census 1841 as 1776), and the other people in the residence are James Smith 25 years, and his wife Jean Smith 25 years. No wonder there is confusion, all the James and Jeans. It would seem that the names of Alfred, John and James were traditional family names, my husband's forenames are Robert John, and my younger son Kevin James, then there are my husband's immediate family (and their children) all have those names. Anyway, I am hoping that someone has broken the brick wall and we can all rest finally knowing the name of my husband's (I think) great, great, great grandfather. My husbands father Alfred John was employed by (?) military during the riots in Dublin, and felt sick of all the violence, and immigrated to Canada. If anyone out there would like further information on him, I will be happy to share.

Lynne

Hello and a Warm Welcome to TalkingScot, Lynn [scotland-flag]

Jean Jeanie is still a Moderator and active member on our board, so you will likely have a response from her soon.

As a new member, it is also worth noting that you may also contact her or any other member by PM (private message) through our forum. To do this, you would click on the PM box in the lower left of the displayed message and you will be taken to a message form which you can fill out and the system will automatically forward it on your behalf.

Greetings Frances.

Your reference to a PM icon being in the lower left of a post is not the first time, I've seen the advice from the Admin or Moderating team, but I, for one, have never found such an icon. (Perhaps I'm blind).

Do Moderator's and Admin work with a different template?

Lower left on my computer screen has a box with red writing 'PostReply' which I have used to post to this thread, or at the very bottom left, in the banner, an Icon for 'Board Index' including an arrow, that takes one back to the top of the page and the top left 'User Control Panel' link which I use to get to the PM's.

Hello Alan,

It looks like the PM and the Profile buttons now only appear when you are logged on. They used to be there all the time. It could be the new forum software. I prefer it the way it used to be. I never log on unless I'm going to post something or reply to a PM and then I log off again. Trouble is that if I find something that I may want to send a PM about I have to leave that page to logon and then find my way back to wherever I can’t remember I was again.

I found the profile button useful for checking a member's previous posts but now I can't get to that unless I go through the same motions.

Alan

p.s. I don't think I've initiated a PM conversation since the new software came online otherwise I would have been wondering what happened to the button.

Glad I'm not the only one having memory problems. If I want to think low, I only have to think of the last ten years of Mum's Alzheimer's, but then I'm reminded I only need to worry when I can no longer remember/realize my memory is failing, and then of course it's too late to worry, so cheer up tomorrow is another day.

Hello Alan:

Thank you for pointing our my mis-directions. As an Admin Group member, I do indeed see a different screen, so I do heartily apologise.

The PM (private message button) now appears in the column to the right of the onscreen message. For example, in my post you will see:

Ok, here's another question: Whenever I click on the PM icon on the right side of the page as you described it above, what I get is a copy of the current post along with your info ie. number of posts etc. in the "Compose message" box. Why is that?

Hi Carol,

The current version of the forum software does that. It assumes that your PM may concern the post you had open when you clicked on the PM button. I seldom require the quote, so it is promptly deleted.

All the best,

Thanks Andrew,

I didn't realize that it was just a quote and could be deleted so I've been going to the person's profile and sending the pm from there. Not a big deal, just didn't understand what was happening!

Hello all. I got really excited when I saw that there were a few replies to my post yesterday, and when I read them they were all about the instructions given to me as a new member, which of course I really did not understand at all. On the positive side it was a relief to learn other people out there forget where they were going or came from computer wise when distracted etc. I do that all the time and it is so frustrating. Another bad habit that I never learn from is finding something of real value to my researh, getting all excited and thinking I'll pick that up later, then forgetting how or what, etc. later. What I have learned to this date is that all of my husband's direct ancestors lived in Tarland and Migvie, so there must be a record there of the father of James Smith b. 1776 or 1774. My suspicion is that his father is forenamed James, John, or Alfred.
