Hello all, I have just downloaded my ancestor's death cert from SP and it says she was interred "south west of Stone of Douglas' Ground. Can anyone help with what and where that is? Many thanks in advance.

You didn't say which burial ground this was in but I saw similar entry recently about a burial in the Calton burial ground in Edinburgh. What it referred to was a burial near to, but South West of the memorial stone (probably large and ornate !) which marked the Lair owned by the Douglas family. Your relative would be placed in an unmarked plot.
Many older graveyards were not laid out in orderly rows and ranks in the way that modern cemeteries are today. This form of recording gave some indication of previous burials; and the original records for the graveyard probably had slightly more specific instructions e.g. 4 paces to the South West - often recorded in the Lair Register as 4pcs SW or similar abbreviations.

Thank you Russell, she lived at 130 Canongate at time of death, right opposite Canongate Kirkyard so guessed she might be buried there but will look into Calton buriel ground also. Much appreciated.
