Burial areas within Scottish asylum grounds

Post by ChipChip » Fri May 12, 2023 3:00 pm

Does anyone know of a list of such places or have experience of them.?

Until recently I wrongly believed that there was no such thing within the boundary of asylum grounds. I am talking about areas that had gravestones rather than areas where people may have been buried in unmarked graves.
I was aware that some asylums were close to burial areas on another piece of land but those areas were not necessarily directly linked to the asylum (e.g. Hawkhead Asylum/Leverndale Hospital & Hawkhead Cemetery at the Paisley/Glasgow boundary).

I have since learned that the former Hartwood Mental Hospital in Shotts, Lanarkshire, which closed about 1998, had such a facility. A few(6) of the graves are listed on Findagrave. Some are clearly for former staff members as opposed to possible patients. Are there other similar situations in Scotland which have marked gravestones.?
