Where were they buried ?.....

Post by Tracey » Sat Oct 15, 2005 10:19 pm

Ok, i have tried and emailed various vicars in these areas and only one very nice Canon in Buckie ( from the church that my gt gt grandparents married in) got back to me unfortunately he couldnt tell me what i needed to findout and gave me some email addresses of other Vicars who never got back to me.

My gt gt grandmother died at 19 East Church St Buckie in 1899

My gt gt gt grandparents died High Street Elgin 1874 & 1884.

All the above were poor although i know my gt gt grandmothers funeral was paid for by her children. I have the death notices for all of them ( thanks to Heather aka Angel ) but it doesnt say where the funeral will be held. I have contacted Moray but they cant help me. I know contacting churches to do with my English side they have who i am looking for in their old books but no buriel plot number but at least i know where they were buried.
Would anyone have any ideas as to where my Scottish forebears are buried ?? As far as i know they were Protestant if that helps.

Hopefully :?

Tracey

The local telephone directory has the following:

Moray Council

Burial Grounds - General Enquiries

Buckie 01343 832691

Elgin 01343 557058

My only reservation with the Buckie number is that the area code is usually 01542 rather than 01343 which is the Elgin code. All other Buckie entries under Moray Council - eg Housing/Community Centres - have 01542 so if the given number for Buckie doesn't give you what you want then try changing the code.

I'm sure there will be records for Elgin cemetery though I don't know exactly when it opened. I don't know what there is in Buckie.

Hi Mary

Thanks for that. All that information is on the Moray Council site ( one particular click on it is my equivelant of the Bible and the people there deciples !! ) I should maybe call but i know with council offices here that they only hold records from a certain date and i have been and viewed the books which are not really public and that the church has the records previous to the council. I have also been to buriel grounds locally and asked the grave diggers where or if someone has been buried there and are more than willing to help and took me to their "office" and got the most amazing old books out of a rusty old filing cabinet, I was horrified and cant believe these books havent been scanned or what ever they do and preserved as original images. My thinking was that the dates i was looking for would be too early for the Council but maybe not. That is why i started to email the churches closest to where they would have died. I have asked Moray Heritage and they have no buriel records of who i am looking for just death notices.

I think you may have given me a push as to what to do tomorrow !!
It doesnt matter how long you have been doing this you still forget the obvious

Thanks Mary

Hope you strike lucky! I would think that Elgin cemetery goes back that far - it's very big. Are you able to visit it?

Hello Mary

Sorry for the delay in answering. Unfortunaly im not able to visit the cemetery but my family in Aberdeen go to Elgin often. Last time they went they sent me a video they did as they drove along the coast and have video,d houses and streets our forebears lived in for me. In some ways it dashed my ideas seeing how much traffic was in East Church St and finding that my gtx3 lived in what is now a Halifax !
