This is an excerpt from Scottish Borders Council newspaper
"Scottish Borders Council's bereavement services recently spent 3 weeks digitally scanning 296 local burial record books, some listing burials dating back to 1800. The next step will be to convert these entries into an electronic database. Eventually the public will be able to access website details of all burials and graves in the Borders, data protection restrictions allowing.
The modernisation will mean quiker, more efficient and reliable system for burial clerks and for the public, eventually all the information will be available online, with maps helping pinpoint the exact positions of all graves in the Borders.
The earliest burial record book we have scanned belongs to Manor Churchyard in Tweeddale. It dates back to 1800. The oldest book in Roxburghshire is from St. Mary's, Hawick (1841) and the oldest in Berwickshire is from Ayton (1849), while the earliest in Ettrick & Lauderdale is from Ettrick churchyard and dates back to 1855"
This sounds like a very exciting project and I will keep you posted when I hear any more details.

Spent last Saturday in the borders in beautiful sunshine.
in Melrose, St boswell Bowden and Morebattle to name a few
Had a lovely time and found one or two ancesters
but to have these records online would be a great resourse especially as winter is now approaching

The records have been scanned up till 2005, and they are looking at the possibility of a website but at the moment there is NO timescale.
