Monumental Inscriptions.....

Post by Alice Bradford » Fri Mar 24, 2006 4:14 am

I ordered MIs for Logierait, Inchture, Longforgan and Airdrie hoping that I might find one ancestor, but I didn't. The ancestors I am searching for died earlier than most of these MIs. I'm wondering did headstones for people buried in say the early 1800s disintegrate, or were they not buried in cemeteries? Searching for death records seems difficult.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Alice,

Here are some possibilities to consider.

1) They were buried elsewhere

They are buried there, but...
2) They never had a headstone (buried in common ground)
3) They never had a headstone (lair bought, but no headtone put up)
4) The headstone has crumbled away over the years and is no longer there
5) The headstone is there, but no longer legible (weather beaten)
6) The headstone is there, but that family member was never inscribed on it
7) The headstone is there, but the indexer missed it (unlikely, but I guess possible)

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Alice

Around that time it's quite possible that as few as 25% or less people had a headstone.
