Accidental deaths.....

Post by JLindsay » Fri Apr 14, 2006 3:06 pm

I'm trying to find out a little bit more about how two relatives died. They were both miners in the Wishaw area who died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary – From the injuries, I'm assuming they had accidents at work.

I'm going to look up the register of corrected entries for more details on my next visit to Edinburgh but I wanted to know where I could go after that. Will the RCE tell me if there was a fatal accident inquiry, and if so, how can I find out whether the records survive? I did put their names into the NAS catalogue with no results, but I'm not sure if that was the right way to search!

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Mac

I had looked there but these deaths were in 1917 and 1918 and aren't covered.

I'm only assuming they died at work but I won't know until I've looked up the RCEs - one died of "fractured trachea" and the other of "shock due to injuries"

Hi Joyce

After the introduction of the relevant act in 1895 there would have been Fatal Accident Inquiries into these industrial deaths. The RCE entries should give you the dates of the Sheriff Court inquiries before a jury, and, most likely, the records of these inquiries will be available at National Archives of Scotland.

Note also that it's possible that there could have been a Sheriff Court action relating to a compensation claim, as well as the original FAI material.

The National Archives of Scotland hold Sheriff Court records of Accidental Deaths or FAI's as they call them. If you contact someone at Gereral Register House in Princes Street, Edinburgh, I'm sure that they will be able to help you.
