Inveresk/Musselburgh.....

Hi I am just wondering if anyone out there knows about Inveresk (Fisherrow) and Musselburgh graveyards for deaths around the early 1800's to the late 1800's?

Is it easy to get to from Falkirk and what are the chances that I will find one of my ancestors there?

Can't help you with this enquiry but I just wondered if you ever managed a visit to Larbert East Churchyard?

Hi Pandabean

Inveresk is a lovely church and graveyard and well maintained.

If you travel along Musselburgh High Street when you get to the traffic lights at the town Hall turn right up Newbigging, and follow it up past the park. At the top turn right and the church gates are right at the end of the road.

Although to my knowledge, we have nobody in there we had a look a couple of months ago and the stones are mostly in pretty good order. they obviously had money around these parts! I stayed at the other end of town where those without money stayed!!

Take a walk along the length of Inveresk Main Street. There are some lovely old houses there relatively untouched by the march of progress.

I’m afraid I can’t help you with your query either but looks like Russell came to the rescue for you. I hope I’m not hi-jacking your thread but wanted to let you know that if you, or anyone else, have any ancestors buried in Larbert then apanderson is the person to contact.

If I may, I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Anne (apanderson) who has spent a tremendous amount of time over the last several years transcribing and photographing the monuments in Larbert Churchyard…not an easy task I’m sure. The transcriptions are excellent and the photographs of the gravestones are amazing and exceptionally clear. I’ve recently received several photographs and transcriptions thanks to Anne’s generosity and talent and now have something to cherish besides names and dates.

I believe Anne is the process of getting her own website up and running and I know it will be of great benefit to many of us with connections to Larbert . So Anne, my grateful thanks for your time, talent, and energy =D>

Hi,

Yes I did but I didn't find the people that I was looking for as the stones were removed during renovation work in the 70's I think.

Russel:
I cannot remember which end my lot stayed in but it was probably the poorer end as they were mostly fisherman and miners. How easy is it to find people within this graveyard? One of the families I am looking for is Fairnie and they lived in Inveresk for quite some time.

Your rellies would have been at both ends of town. Miners would have been at the Wallyford end down near the saltpans. Coal mines and saltpans go together!
The fisherfolk would have been just along from Fisherrow harbour right at the other end of Musselburgh. Inveresk and Musselburgh are joined now but weren't way back when.
The graveyard is quite compact but would take a couple of hours to wander round.
I would presume that the East Lothian Parks & Cemeteries Dept would have the lair records for the churchyard.
I should have it but can't find it - typical!
My family migrated to Musselburgh then migrated again to the West coast so I have no official links with the town but there's a lovely book with lots of old photographs of Musselburgh, Inveresk and Fisherrow called 'Musselburgh Revisited' (ISBN 0 7509 3266X) I was thrilled to see a photograph of my father playing the piano as the very last photo in the book. Its worth a look just for the Inversesk photos.

Interesting thread, I have a GGGrandfather who was born and died in Inveresk, but I doubt if I will find a headstone for him as he died in the poorhouse. But I must have a keek at what is available

I know this is an old post, but if you have not managed to get down to Musselburgh, I would be willing to go have a look for you as I live in Musselburgh and am currently doing research which means I pay frequent visits to the cemetery at Inveresk.
