Scottish Cemeteries.....

Post by Fiona C Davidson » Thu Aug 03, 2006 5:37 am

Hi

I have a query about cemeteries in Scotland. Does a national index exist (if so what is on it), or counties indexes? Being hopeful here maybe???I'm particulary interested in burials in Argyll (Dunoon), Stirling (Stirling the town, and Kilsyth), and Lanark (Shettleson).

I've just learnt a new word - lair. Never knew it meant a burial place! Thought it was a cave or a hide out or something!

Any assitance MUCH appreciated!
:D

Hi Fiona
As far as I'm aware, as yet there is no NBI for Scotland though I beleive that is an eventual aim - "The Scottish National Death and Burial Index" is a project which has been undertaken by S.A.F.H.S. with the member societies and the G.R.O. for Scotland. So many local FHS are involved in collating MIs & burial information for their own area just now.

We have a list of web sites which may of some help here (being added to all the time!);
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4555
and the largest depository of published and unpublished MIs in Scotland is held by the Scottish Genealogy Society:
www.scotsgenealogy.com
They also sell MI books through their online shop, and I can see there is a publication which covers Kilsyth:
http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/ ... re_MI.html
Publications for the other areas you are interested in can be found here:
http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/ ... re_MI.html
http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/ ... re_MI.html
Local libraries may be able to help with specific look ups if they have the publications - see library link at top of page.
More info about MIs in general can be found here:
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4556

The other area to explore is to find out if any death records exist in the OPRs for the area you are interested in. A pdf file from the GROS site should help you with this. If you find some death records do exist you could order the microfilm from your local LDS Family History Centre for a small fee. However, death, burial or mortcloth records in OPRs can give very sparse information in most cases - it is a lucky & reasonably rare find which includes name, age & cause & date of death! Depends on the parish.

Lastly, there may exist some lair records for the areas you are interested in. Usually this would involve contacting the local council, or sometimes the local crematorium & they may be able to give some further information, though often a date & place of death is required before they can help & some area charge a fee for this service.

Hope all this is of some help. I've not looked yet at the individual areas you mentioned, but if you need any further help or info, just yell!
Best wishes
Lesley

As well as the Scottish NBI there's a SAFHS separate project on the go to list all known cemetaries, - but the name and location only, not any info on who is interred.

Hi Fiona

If you find out wher abouts someone is buried in or about Dunoon let me know as I am there a few times a year. You may have to wait a while for my next trip home but I'll have a look when I'm there if no-one from thereabouts offers.

I don't think there's anyone from Dunoon on the board but someone else's mother lives there though I can't remember who. I was born and brought up there.

Local archives can hold different kinds of records relating to burials, such as dues books, burial register, lair registers, and maps. Burial registers can be extremely useful as they do, of course, list those who may not have a headstone, and therefore won't be included in the MIs.

Though some do charge for staff time to look up an entry, if you have the exact date of death, it is a lot easier and quicker. Depending on the number of volumes to look through, it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to search the registers.
