McColl/McInnes burial ground Appin.....

Post by angus » Mon Aug 07, 2006 4:31 am

I am curious if anyone has ever heard of a McColl/McInnes burial ground in Appin? I was browsing and found a website for The Friends of Appin Society who had posted a tour going to this cemetery. It was reported as an uphill climb and had a view overlooking Stalker Castle. My 3 grt grandparents were McColl & McInnes and they died in Port Appin in 1891 & 1894. Can anyone give me any idea of where they might be buried?
Has anyone ever heard of this burial ground?

I'm a new member and I just love this web site. It was recommended by one of your members and I am so glad she told me about it. You all seem to be so friendly and helpful.

The most likely candidate is the Kinlochlaigh Churchyard, just off the Oban to Ballachulish road, and in view of Castle Stalker. The MIs were recorded by David Cargill and Barbara Fairweather in 1968, and can be found in the Argyllshire MIs Volume 1 - Lismore and Appin, published by the Scottish Genealogy Society in 2002 (ISBN 1-904069-07-2). There are about 30 McColl graves listed, with one McInis and one McInnes. I have a copy of this book, and would be pleased to look up specific names for you.

Also in sight of Castle Stalker is the smaller Portnacroish Episcopalian Churchyard, a mile or two from Kinlochlaigh. However, most of the MIs there (they appear in the same book) are for the Stewart family.

Finally, further up the coast and therefore not within site of Castle Stalker is the churchyard of St John's Episcopal Church in Ballachulish. A few, but by no means all, of the MIs in this churchyard are also listed in the same book. Amongst the graves there, both listed and unlisted, are many McColls and McInnes, and there is evidence from graves and from census data and statutory records of births, deaths and marriages of inter-marriage between the two families.

My husband's great-grandfather Duncan McColl originally came from Duror in Appin (about 8 miles south of Ballachulish) and records suggest that some of his kin married into the McInnes family in the Ballachulish area.

I am sorry that this e-mail comes so long after your initial posting, but I have only recently found this excellent TalkingScot web-site and forum
