Hi
Just been on holiday to Wigtownshire, which I can highly recommend, and in the best tradition of genealogy freaks did a bit of graveyard trawling which in the case of my ancestors merely confused an issue or two. (Jim, who do you have as the parents of Elizabeth McDonald who married James McCammond. I'll pm you about all of this once I'm clearer on whether I have a piccie of the grave of the correct people!)
Anyway while viewing Glasserton Church where I am fairly sure I have no rellies I saw this gravestone and could not resist transcribing it:
It is the grave of William Hannay who died 15th June 1773 aged 44.
Stop, passenger, the humbler virtue know
Of one in life who never made a foe
Honest and plain and still as light was givn
He trod with willing steps the path to heavn
What tho the Rich despise the lowly kind
They not in God a partial judge shall find
Beyond the grave all vain distinctions cease
And only saints are crownd with endless peace
The stone was erected by his wife Elizabeth Donnan who, along with two of their children William and John is also buried in that grave.
I loved the little poem and seriously wished they were mine so I thought I'd share it with others who will appreciate it. I could not find any children for them on the IGI tho there is a submitted marriage. If anyone lays claim to them I have a photo of the stone.
