Eastern Necropolis, Glasgow

Post by jennyblain » Wed Aug 30, 2006 6:57 pm

I spent a bit of time walking round the Eastern Necropolis on Sunday when I was in Glasgow. It is in a sad state - much graffiti, some beer bottles, and many stones are fallen. I took a few photos while there. (A couple are at http://wyrdswell.co.uk/ancestors/images ... khead.html )

I understand that there aren't MI's recorded from there, and can see why - so many stones are fallen and the cemetery is large. But does anybody have access to any documentation at all? I know that many of my kin are there - there are two Pendlebury lairs, and other family members may be there also. Any information about burials would be greatfully received.

I was quite surprised to see how close it is to the place where Parkhead Forge was situated - where the Forge shopping centre is now, just across the Gallowgate.

Hi Jenny,
The Mitchell Library have, on microfilm, the Eastern Necropolis Burial Registers from 1847 to 1918.
But no name index, and i'm not sure if the records are complete between these years.
If you don't know when a person died then you'd need to scroll through the film.

The Glasgow Cemeteries Office at 20 Trongate has the records from 1847 to the present day.

They might do one or two free look-ups at a named cemetery if you know the date of death.
Otherwise you'd have to dig deep...they charge £56 per person for checking all the Glasgow cemeteries.
I know they are a "working" office, but i do wish they'd drop the cost by, say, about £50...!

ps, here's a wee snippet about Ludovic Mann in Clydebank that i'd mentioned last friday.

The excavation site now has high rise flats built over it...typical toon cooncil.

Aye - I've had a look, last Friday. It's totally dependent on knowing the date of burial, really, or rather the date of entry into the record, and of course what I have are the dates of death, and didn't have the precise dates on Friday because I didn't have the computer with me... But a cousin has sent me some details of who's in the Pendlebury Lairs, which are numbered 3450 and 3451. It's knowing the location of these within the Necropolis that's difficult though - so I can go there and take photies, with or without stones...! But the Parks & Recreation people may be able to help there..

Quite agreed - but I may get a chance to drop in there at some time... just maybe. I do have most of the dates of death for the more recent ones, thanks to SP, including the death of my very mysterious Thomas Lynch on 15th April 1889 at 779 Great Eastern Road...

Thanks for the Ludovic Mann url, about the rock-art etc. :)

regards,
Jenny

Thanks for the thought but I usually work on a Saturday :) . I don't have set shifts. It will just be pot luck whether I happen to be off or not for the next one. I'm sure you will all manage without me just don't tell me about it

I contacted the Glasgow Cemeteries via email back at the start of the year. It took a while to get a reply and to be honest it was a bit of a waste of time. I had the name and date of the deceased but I still was asked for £54, at the time, up front to do a search. At that point I ran away.
