Old Churchyard location

Post by jegss » Sun Dec 10, 2006 8:40 pm

Does anyone know the location of St. Mary's Churchyard in Glasgow? My Ancester was buried there in 1855 but i can't find any mention of it anywhere. Thanks

Hi jegss,

What area was your rellie living when he died? Or where did he die? St Mary's Churchyard? If you are searching in graveyards it might not show up. Look for St Mary's Church. One of my rellies is buried in his local churchyard, but this is not listed as a graveyard for some reason.

That kind of info might help to pin it down, but I should mention that at least two of my rellies were buried some miles from their home, in family plots, one even in a different town!

Found these on Google...

St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral - 300 Great Western Rd, Glasgow, G4 9JB - 0141 339 6691
St. Mary's Catholic Church - 89 Abercromby St, Glasgow, G40 2DQ - 0141 554 0872
Tron St. Mary's Church of Scotland 128 Red Rd, Glasgow, G21 4PJ - 0141 558 1011

Re: Old Churchyard location - St Mary's

Hi Jegss,
Re St. Mary's Churchyard.
For 1855 i'd be thinking of the 2nd on Mary's list - Abercromby St.
--
But according to a useful wee booklet by the GWSFHS -
"Burial Grounds in Glasgow" by June A. Wlling & J. Scott Fairie.

It says the 1st burial was 1839, and was demolished 1960s?
Alas also - no known registers. Only Lairholders 1870 (at Mitchell Library Archives)

So not looking too good, but no harm contacting the church to check.

ps, but on a more upbeat note, a warm welcome to TalkingScot!

Thanks to emanday and Jack for the help and welcome. My relative was born in Old Monkland, he was a canal boatman and died in an accident at Blackhill Locks in the Monkland canal. I followed a link on the the Scotlands family website for MI's and got this info - Buried St Mary's churchyard, Glasgow, not cert.

I have searched the graveyard in Abercrombie St but some of the stones are now illegible and others fallen over or vandalised, also i came accross a stone which said Calton burial ground so that makes me think it's the wrong graveyard.
I'll try to get hold of the book you mention from GWSFHS.
Thanks again to you both.

Hi Jegss and welcome

I notice in your post you mention Blackhill Locks. If you do a search on TS (use the button at the top of the page) for Blackhill Locks, you'll find a few more posts on the subject. I have a distant connection to Blackhill Locks myself. But you might find it interesting to read the other posts.

Cheers!

Calton Burial Ground

Post by Jack » Tue Dec 12, 2006 8:47 pm

Hi Jegss,
You were mentioning the Calton Burial Ground.
This was at the southern end of Abercromby St. (St. Mary's at the northern end).
The southern end, from Canning St (now London Rd) up to Stevenson St, was originally called Clyde St.
The Mitchell has the Calton records 1792 to 1854 on microfilm, and the original book for 1855-60,
but you say the 1855 burial was St. Mary's, so not of any use!

Just to confuse things a bit more, I have an ancestor who was a member of St Mary's Episcopal but was buried in the Glasgow Necropolis in 1840. If all else fails you might check that film at the Mitchell...?

Regards,
Sarah
